The Smart Choices Program™ is a voluntary front-of-pack nutrition labeling program created to help guide consumers in making smarter food and beverage selections at the supermarket. The Smart Choices Program symbol on products helps consumers by: • Simplifying the shopping and selection experience • Identifying smarter food and beverage choices, within product categories • Providing consistent nutritional messaging across product brands and stores • Displaying at-a-glance calorie information on the front of the package The Smart Choices Program™ was developed based on the need for a single, trusted and reliable front-ofpack nutrition labeling program that could help guide consumers’ food and beverage choices. The first of its kind, the Smart Choices Program™ was developed by a diverse group of scientists, academicians, health and nutrition specialists and food industry experts. Food manufacturers and retailers can now voluntarily adopt the Smart Choices Program™ for products in 19 individual categories including cereals, meats, dairy and snacks. To qualify, products cannot exceed defined thresholds for fats (saturated, trans, total), sodium, cholesterol and added sugars. For most categories, products must also provide nutrients to encourage such as calcium, fiber, or vitamins A, C and E, or food groups to encourage including fruits, vegetables, whole grains or dairy. The program nutrition criteria were collaboratively developed by scientists and multi-sector food industry leaders based on the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. When you participate in the Smart Choices Program™, your package will display the Smart Choices Program symbol, demonstrating confidence to consumers that your products meet strict science-based nutrition criteria.
