Articulating Your Faith Using the Apostle’s Creed as an outline, I invite you to write a little under each statement of what it is that you truly believe. Don’t worry if you don’t believe each statement here, many people struggle with one or more of these statements. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God? Do you see God as your Father? Do you see God as being Almighty? Do you see God as being the maker of heaven and earth? What other thoughts do you have about God? And in Jesus Christ, His Only Son, our Lord Do you believe there was a man named Jesus? Do you believe Jesus was divine? Do you see Jesus as being Lord and what does Lord mean to you? Do you see Jesus as being the son of God? Born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. How about this statement? Do you feel Jesus was born of a virgin? Do you believe he suffered for everyone? Do you believe he was crucified? He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. Do you believe Jesus went to hell for three days? Do you believe he rose from the dead and now sits with God? Do you believe Jesus and God are one in the same? What other thoughts do you have about Jesus? From thence he shall come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe Jesus is going to come back? Do you think he is going to come back to judge us all? What is judgment to you? I believe in the Holy Spirit. Do you? What/Who is the Holy Spirit? Is it part of God or is this something else? What does the Holy Spirit do today? The holy catholic (universal) church, the communion of saints. What does this mean at all to you? Anything? The forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. So do you believe this? Do you believe all of your sins are forgiven? Do you believe your body will be resurrected? How about everlasting life? What is that? How do you see the afterlife? Do you feel that everyone will have everlasting life or only some people? I invite you to work through each of these and in any areas that you are struggling, or have further questions, look in the Bible and see if that helps. Remember, these statements were created by people. People who were simply trying to articulate what followers of Jesus should believe during their era. On our website: www.maranachurch.com/faith.htm you can find a few Bible references to help you along if you are struggling with any part of this. But if that isn’t helpful, contact the church at 207-6100 and ask to speak to a pastor. Remember, faith is a journey – you can’t get there overnight! Continue to take time thinking and praying about each of these areas and remember: Not everyone agrees with all of these, and that is okay! Nobody should ever demand that you believe every statement in this creed!
