                                       Chapter 1. Introduction

Welcome to the Service Discovery User‟s manual. This manual will provide you with all the information
you need to both publish and discover services from the Service Discovery capability. Service Discovery
is made up of two primary components, the ability to publish services and the ability to discover services.
The publication capability is realized via the Net-Centric Publisher (NCP) user interface or the Universal
Description, Discovery & Integration (UDDI) Publication service. The discovery capability is realized
through both the Service Discovery user interface and native UDDI Inquiry services.

Any user with an Army Knowledge Online/Defense Knowledge Online (AKO/DKO) account or
Common Access Card (CAC) card is able to use the Service Discovery web interface, while any user with
a valid DoD CAC or External Certificate Authority (ECA) soft certificate may access the native UDDI
Inquiry services. To publish services through the NCP users must have a valid DKO account and must
have associated that account with their DoD Metadata Registry (MDR) Account. (Instructions for doing
this can be found in Chapter 2 of the NCP User‟s manual.) Access to the native UDDI Publication
services will be subject to a Memorandum Of Understanding (MoU) being executed between the PEO-
GES Project Management Office (PMO) and any program, organization, or user that desires access and
agrees to abide by the UDDI publication guidelines.

The Service Discovery user interface allows users to discover all service or service provider information
that has been published via the NCP. The user interface is hosted on the Data Services Environment
(DSE) and is accessible by logging into the DSE and clicking the Service Discovery tab on the top menu
bar of the screen. Users can discover services or service providers by performing a keyword search or
using the advanced search capabilities to locate the appropriate services/providers to meet their needs.

This manual only covers what you need to know to perform Service Discovery search or inquiry tasks.
For further instructions on how to use the MDR or the NCP, please refer to the MDR User Manual or the
NCP User Manual.

Conventions Used In This Manual
The following conventions are used in this manual.

                                            Table 1. Conventions

Convention Description

Bold Text The names of buttons, fields, menu options, and links will be in bold text.
[Brackets] Keyboard names, such as [ENTER] and [TAB] are enclosed within brackets.
Angle Brackets (>) Navigation selections are connected with angle brackets (>). For example, the
instruction, “From the XML tab, select the XML-Admin option, then the Approve
                       option” will be written as:
Select the XML > XML-Admin > Approve navigation option.
Italicized Text The name of an option from a drop-down list or radio buttons. For example:
Select Active from the Status drop-down list.
Values that should be typed exactly as documented will also be italicized. For
                       example:
Enter 7001 in the Port Number field.
Indicates a tip for using the Service Discovery.

Searching Service Providers
Use the Search Service Providers section of the Service Discovery search page to search for service
providers. You can search for service providers either by Keyword/Phrase or through Advanced Search.

Figure 12. Search Service Providers section

Searching by Keyword/Phrase searches both the name and description of a service provider. The search
returns any and all service providers in which the specific keyword or phrase appear in either the name or
description. This query acts the same as if one appended the percent (%) wildcard to the beginning and
the end of the search keyword or phrase. (See the Using Wildcards section of this manual.)

Searching Service Providers Using the Advanced Search
In the advanced search you can specify additional search criteria by selecting multiple criteria and
multiple values within each criterion for the search. In the advanced search the Keyword text is also
considered a criterion. The service providers need to have the keyword text match AND meet any other
criterion selections.

To perform advanced search for the service providers, click on the Advanced Search link from the
Search Service Providers section (see Figure 12). The Service Providers Advanced Search page is
displayed.

Figure 13. Service Providers Advanced Search page

The advanced search page for Service Providers allows for the selection of multiple values within a
criterion (these lead to „OR‟ searches) and selection of values in multiple criteria (these result in „AND‟
searches). Specifically, the JCA options are displayed in a drop-down that enables multi-selection, and
for the Agency and Namespace options, hierarchy tables permit multi-selection. The text entered in the
Keyword/Phrase field is also considered part of the criteria for the search and searches the Name and
Description fields of Service Providers. Additionally, the DoD IT Portfolio Repository (DITPR) Number
field enables you to search for the DITPR Number of Service Providers.

Figure 14. Service Providers Advanced Search page

On the Advanced Search page counts are displayed for each search option. Counts are provided to
indicate how many service providers exist that match the search option value. By default, options are not
shown if there are no service providers that currently have that option as a value. To view all options,
regardless of service providers matching the option value, click the [Show All Counts] link. To display
only those options that have an existing service provider, click the [Hide Zero Counts] link.

Any search selections made before clicking either [Show All Counts] or [Hide
Zero Counts] link will need to be reentered.

When you access the advanced search page you see either the selections from your
last search or a clean search page. If you edit the search page and then select either

Searching Services
Use the Search Services section of the Service Discovery search page to search for services. You can
search for services either by Keyword/Phrase or through Advanced Search.

                                     Figure 17. Search Services section

Searching by Keyword/Phrase searches the name, description, and comment fields of a service. The
search returns any and all services in which the keyword or phrase appears in the name, description, or
comments field. This query acts the same as if one appended the percent (%) wildcard to the beginning
and the end of the search keyword or phrase. (See the Using Wildcards section of this manual.)

Searching Services Using the Advanced Search
In the advanced search you can specify additional search criteria by selecting multiple criteria and
multiple values within each criterion for the search. In the advanced search the Keyword text is also
considered a criterion. The services need to have the keyword text match AND meet any other criterion
selections.

To perform advanced search for the services, click on the Advanced Search link from the Search
Services section (see Figure 17). The Services Advanced Search page is displayed.

Figure 18. Services Advanced Search page

The advanced search page for Services allows for the selection of multiple values within a criterion (these
lead to „OR‟ searches) and selection of values in multiple criteria (these result in „AND‟ searches).
Specifically, the JCA, Lifecycle Stage, Classification, WSI Compliance, and Fingerprint options are
displayed in drop-downs that permit multi-selection. (Classification values are determined by the site you

Categories options, the hierarchy tables permit multi-selection. The text entered in the Keyword/Phrase
field is also considered part of the criteria for the search and searches the Name, Definition, and Comment
fields of Services. Additional criteria fields include DITPR Number, Version, and Points of Contact (as
text fields).

On the Advanced Search page you can display counts for search options. Counts are provided for all
options to indicate how many services exist that match the option value. By default, options are not
shown if there are no services that currently have that option as a value. To view all options, regardless of
services matching the option value, click the [Show All Counts] link. Click the [Hide Zero Counts]
link to return to only displaying options that have an existing service.

Any search selections made before clicking either [Show All Counts] or [Hide
Zero Counts] link will need to be reentered.

When you access the advanced search page you see either the selections from your
last search or a clean search page. If you edit the search page and then select either
[Show All Counts] or [Hide Zero Counts] link, the page will refresh to show the
appropriate options AND set the search selections back to either the choices from
your last search or a clean search page (whichever it was when you accessed the
                  page).

For example, in Figure 19 above the Advanced Search would look for services with a JCA of Command
& Control or Net-Centric AND with a Lifecycle Stage of Operational AND with a Governance
Namespace of DODENT, ABCS, AOP, AD, MPO, IROF, TBMCS, BFT, C2, C2_SSA, CES, SD, COE,
DCGS, DEV, DCIP, DON, DTIC, FIN, GCSS-MC, GFM, GFMDI, GMI, JLOG, JTI, JUM, LOG, DSDS,
MS, NetOps, RDWS, RP, TBD, TRAINING, zTEST, TIS, TSO, or SABRS.

To clear all search selections, click the [Reset] link.

When executing a search you are taken to a results page.

The ESM Metrics information for the service endpoint is available if the service is being monitored (see
figures below).

The ADS information is available on the details page if the service was marked as authoritative in the
EADS Registry.

An authoritative body administrator in the EADS Registry application can mark a
service authoritative during the data source approval process if the data source
refers to a service in the service registry. In that case an option to publish to NCES
Service Registry will be available to the authoritative body administrator. For
information about approving a data source, see the
“Reviewing/Approving/Rejecting Data Sources” section of the EADS User
                 manual.

Using Wildcards
There are two wildcard characters: the percent sign (%) and the underscore (_). The percent sign can be
used to indicate that any series of characters may appear where the percent sign appears in the query
phrase. The underscore indicates that any single character may appear where the underscore appears in
the query phrase. Using either of these wildcards will result in the search being executed exactly as it is
specified by the user, i.e. no processing is done to modify the query.

                  All searches are case insensitive.

Subscribing to Service Providers and Services
The Service Discovery user interface enables you to subscribe to services and/or service providers. You
can create subscriptions, specify the notification mechanism for your subscriptions, and manage your
subscriptions by viewing, editing, or deleting the subscriptions.

The properties and functionalities of the Subscription interface are compliant with UDDI V3 Subscription
API and limited to its features, specifically for Creating, Deleting and Notification mechanism and
content. For further information on UDDI Subscription API, refer to:

http://www.uddi.org/pubs/uddi_v3.htm#_Toc85908128

The content of the notification messages will be XML format conforming to UDDI V3 specification.

Subscription notification messages are sent at regular intervals, regardless of whether the subscribed
provider or service has been modified. Per the specification, the content of the messages will be different
based on whether the subscribed provider or service was modified during the interval covered by the
notification.

Creating Subscriptions
Perform the following steps to create your subscriptions:

    1. Use the Search option to access the search page for the providers and services. Search for
providers or services either by Keyword/Phrase or through Advanced Search.

    2. From the search results click on the provider or the service name to access the Service Provider
Details or the Service Details page. The subscription count represents the number of subscriptions
made to the provider or service by the users in Service Discovery.

Email Your email address if you chose to be notified through email.
Endpoint Endpoint where you would like to receive the notifications if
you chose to be notified through endpoint.
Notification Interval The frequency of the notifications you would like to receive,

For the notification type Email or Endpoint: The content of the notification
messages will be XML format conforming to UDDI V3 specification. Notification
messages are sent at regular intervals, regardless of whether the subscribed
provider or service has been modified. The content of the messages will be
different based on the brief setting of the subscription. Please refer to Appendix C
of the UDDI specification for example notification messages.

A restart of Systinet will reset the start time of the notification services. This will
lead to notifications being sent, past the expected interval (only for the first time).

The subscription is created in UDDI and is listed on the Subscriptions page. You can access the list
through the Subscriptions link on the menu on the left side of the page.

a Show Details link will be available to view the details page. If there are no changes to the
subscribed provider or service for the specified date range, there will be no data to display.

The subscription results will contain information only if the last update date was
within the specified date range, or if it was deleted during the specified date range.
It does not find all past modifications. Also, the last update date for a provider is
impacted if any of the services within the provider are updated.

If the last update date of the subscribed provider/service is not within the specified
date range or if the subscribed provider/service was not deleted within the
specified date range, the results will state that.
