					         Mrs. Gregory’s First Day of Third Grade Lesson Plans 2011-2012

          Announcements on the television
7:15-     Take attendance on paper.
8:00      Send up lunch count.
8:00-     Morning Work- students will complete the class names word search made on
8:30      Puzzlemaker and then read a book when finished. Make sure to put out a
          sharpened pencil and basket of books.

          When students arrive, they will put all supplies in their brown paper grocery
          bags under their desks.
          Put large supplies such as hand sanitizer, soap, disinfectant wipes, baggies,
          copier paper in marked boxes in the room

             MAKE SURE TO ASK EACH CHILD HOW ARE THEY GETTING HOME TODAY?
          Create a looks like/ sounds like chart for the hallway and bathroom. Use
8:30-     these to create and go over hallway procedures, bathroom procedures with
8:50      the kids.

          Practice getting in number order by calling students to line up. Time and see
          how quick and quiet we can do it.

          MUST KNOW procedures taught:
          Hallway
           Bathroom
          Water
          Number order
          Quiet mouse game
          Turn off light when exiting room
8:50-     Review bathroom and hall procedures just created. Take a bathroom break.
9:05      Use time to practice hall, bathroom and Quiet Mouse procedures
           Pull kids to carpet. Introduce myself and Tina.

9:50      Discuss mini lesson procedures for good listening, when I am reading a book,
          when to ask questions at a mini lesson and “knees please.”

          Read aloud My Teacher’s Secret Life. Share my Me Bag and Tina’s Me Bag.

9:50-     Create a looks like/ sounds like chart for recess and lunchtime. Review
10:05     cafeteria expectations and recess expectations. Make sure recess includes
          not sitting on tether balls, not running on red, coming when I whistle. One
          whistle blow means “stop/ danger.” Three whistle blows means “line up.”
10:05-    Use time to practice hall, bathroom and Quiet Mouse procedures.

 10:50-   Go the carpet and read aloud the book If Everybody Did. Write our Class
 11:10    Promise. Review pencil sharpening / crayon/ marker/ colored pencil
          procedures/where to turn in work. Pass out each child’s cut out and ask
          them to decorate it as themselves. While students are working, call
          individuals over to sign the class promise.
          Try to include these ideas:
               No put downs
               Trustworthy
               Truthful
               Personal best
               Active learner
          Students will write one sentence with the prompt “This year I will…” about
          how they will behave.

          Go over Behavior Chart and pulling sticks and super stick

11:10-    Review cafeteria and bathroom procedures. Go to lunch and take a

8:00- 8:20    Morning Work- simple basic fact addition color in picture sheet
              and then read a book when finished. Make sure to put out a
              sharpened pencil and basket of books.

 8:20-9:00     Pull kids to carpet. Introduce myself. I will model greeting them.
              Then ask who can name one or two classmates and so on.
              Complete yarn activity sharing one fact about self. Pass yarn
              back and forth creating a web. Discuss how we are a team and
              interwoven in each now.
              Review gimme 5 procedure and knees please procedures.

9:00- 9:10    Review hallway procedures, bathroom procedures and how we
              line up and check our anchor charts. Practice getting in number
              order. Time and see how quick and quiet we can do it.
 9:10-9:20    Take a bathroom break

9:20-10:25    Begin to label and organize materials. Show students the model
              desk and put labels on supplies.

              Students that finish early may color in ticket folders or morning
              work or read from baskets.
10:25-11:20   Read aloud book It is Not a Box. Relate how we are all different
              and all of us have different schema. Define schema. Introduce
              squiggle line art. Model writing about the picture when finish
              drawing.
              Go over coloring (name on back of paper, use pencil first, no
              white, take pride, no sharpening colored pencils in electric pencil
              sharpeners).Send students to desks.

              Go to lunch and take a bathroom break.

 9:20-9:40    Take a bathroom break/ snack

9:40-10:15    Model how to write down homework and ask students to write
              down the homework. Pass out me bags.

10:15-11:00   Continue to Work on Squiggle Writing- due today.

11:00-11:20   Review and practice emergency drill procedures- fire drill,
              tornado, code red. Go over which walls to go to for tornado, how
              to sit, silence, if we are outside, etc. For a fire drill talk about how
              we do NOT use number order, line up silently.

10:35-10:35   Play Heads Up Seven Up

10:35-11:20   Read Aloud More Than Anything Else by Bradby. Discuss with
              students how more than anything else Booker T Washington
              wanted to learn how to read. Share our hopes and dreams for the
              school year. Have students turn pair share with a neighbor what
              their hopes and dreams are for this school year. Make it similar to
              oral goal setting. Model how to write a letter to yourself sharing
              your hopes and dreams using the friendly letter format. Have
              students share 1 hope or dream for the school year whit the class.

 1:20-1:45    Review with students the story Flat Stanley we are reading as a
              read aloud. Discuss how he traveled. Explain that we will be
              making a Flat Stanley and he will be traveling around the “world”
              today. Teach students the Continents song. Have students color
              and cut out Stanley. Call students to come up and point out a
              continent with their Stanley.

 8:40-9:15    Math Workshop – introduce rules and norms. Brainstorm these
              together as a class

 9:15-9:35    Practice rules and norms with the game Poison from yesterday
9:35-10:05    Teach 10 more and 10 less on the hundreds chart.

              Let students explore hundred chart puzzles and pieces.

10:20-11:20   How to care for books
              Read aloud Wild About Books
              Show Madame Li”bear”ian book
              Students use time to finish up work and pick out books for their
              book boxes
