Ukrainian Literary Scholarship in Ukraine Since
Independence*
Ukrainian literary scholarship since independence is a mirror of the Ukrainian
revolution (to rephrase Lenin’s old dictum on Tolstoy), on a meandering and often
tortured path in search of cultural identity, national dignity, and international
stature. From independence to freedom, from freedom whereto? Literary
scholarship, by virtue of its inherent connection to the literary creativity that took
off since independence and its rootedness in conservative, ideologically charged,
and partisan educational and cultural institutions, thus exposes both breakthroughs
and pitfalls of the contemporary Ukrainian cultural field in an age of post-Soviet
