STEWARDSHIP of DONORS to ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Whereas development consists of identifying and cultivating prospective donors and asking them for gifts, stewardship deals with those who have already
made gifts.
More specifically, stewardship is a process of engaging with donors with the goals of relationship building, message delivery and trust building.
We work to reach these goals by thanking, recognizing, and providing information to donors regarding how their gifts are being used.
We check our progress towards these goals by measuring the following outcomes:
Donor gives regularly
Donor gives to priorities
Donor gives in usable ways
Donor gives to capacity
Donor feels recognized
Donor agrees to participate
Donor spreads the message
In other words, well stewarded donors tend to be more involved in positive ways, including giving more frequent and/or larger gifts.
Although stewardship is a process, not a checklist, it can be helpful to have examples of the kinds of stewardship activities that have proven to be successful. A
table follows, explaining the kind of stewardship activities that can be done. We must always keep in mind that this is not a comprehensive checklist, but
instead is a starting point.
In the table, a number of the most important occasions calling for stewardship are listed, along with the reasoning of why they are important. Since
stewardship occurs at many levels, the suggested stewardship activities are broken down into university, college or division, and department or program level
activities. Note that the first gifts and the larger gifts are given more personalized attention. And since it is important to measure the impact of stewardship
activities, some outcome measures are suggested.
More extensive explanations and examples for even more stewardship occasions may be found at: ____ (Web site) __________.
