With reference to relevant research studies, to what
extent does genetic inheritance influence behavior?

State thesis: To discuss the extent which genetic
inheritance influence behavior

Define/explain behavioral genetics:

 Our DNA carries genetic information
 The genetic information decides the physical traits of an
    individual
 Because physiology can affect psychology, behavior has a
    genetic base

Supporting research and examples

Caspi, 2003: Demonstrate a predisposition for depression
Twin studies: show a stronger concordance rate between
identical twins for behaviors such as alcoholism, schizophrenia,
homosexuality compared to individuals who are not related or
siblings
Bouchard: A twin study that demonstrated that weight gain has
a genetic component

Evaluation

-Studies only demonstrate a correlation, not causation.
-There is always an environment-gene interaction
-There is a variation on the effect of genes on behavior. For
instance genes affect alcoholism and homosexuality more than
they affect depression or religion
-Methodological problems of research (generalisability,
confounding variables)
+Supporting research
+Research is controlled/experimental/scientific
Conclusion

Genes do not cause behavior, but they influence them to a
certain extent. There is almost always an interaction between
environment and genes.
