           1995 was the year.
• The first digital cameras came on the
  market in 1995.
• Made by Kodak and Apple Computers, each
  camera cost $1,000.
• The pictures taken were very small, but
since film was not required, these cameras
were popular with small businesses, realtors
and others that needed immediate photos.
                    Next came the
 high-end digitals in the mid-90s.

• These cameras were regular film cameras
with image sensors added to capture digital
  images.
• The average cost was $20,000.
• These cameras were affordable only for
  professionals with a large budget.
         More and more professions
         began using digital images.

• The medical field and newspaper
photographers were just two professions that
wanted to use digital photos instead of
waiting for darkroom development of film.
• The price of digital cameras began to drop
as they became popular with the average
  comsumer.
  Why digital cameras are preferred
• Digital photos can be seen immediately.
• They can be displayed onscreen or e-mailed.
• They can be easily inserted into documents.

Because of digital images, using cameras
with film will soon be a thing of the
                    past.
                      So how did digital
                    cameras come about?

• In 1969, Bell Laboratories was trying to create
  two things:
      1. A semiconductor memory for computers
      2. Video telephone cameras

          Instead, they invented the
        charge coupled device (CCD).
What did the CCD lead to?

   1970: First video camera
   1975: CCD television camera
Late 70s: Fax machine
          Scanner
          Bar code
          Medical photography equipment
1983 Telescopes were first outfitted with CCD
   devices for space photography. Astronomers
could now take photos in seconds that would
   have taken hours.
1990s Digital cameras became affordable.
Today CCD photography chips are being used
in the Hubble telescope and the Mars Rover.
Phones, PDAs and toys all have digital
   cameras embedded in them.
