Common Security Problems

Because key control is essential to security, you want to protect against:
Key holders making copies of their keys without your knowledge
Loss of security as duplicate keys continue to get duplicated
Undetected entry to sensitive areas of your facility from cylinder picking (cross
   keying) or drilling

Benefits of an A-1 provided keying system:

Implementation and training of in-house system
On-site survey followed by all required key logs, cut sheets, and customized key
   schedules
   Stocked for immediate delivery
   All special keying equipment provided
Over 5,000 possible pinning combinations per keyway with no possibility of cross
   keying
Single point of distribution limits number of dealers actually handling cores and key
   blanks
Eliminate the need to replace cylinders due to wear and tear

“Your facility is only as safe as its weakest point. All of the latest and greatest
security technology on the market today has no value if your cylinder can be
                          picked or your keys duplicated.”

VON DUPRIN XP 98/99 SERIES RIM EXIT DEVICE

The new Von Duprin XP 98/99 Rim Exit Device features a patented center case design that takes the proven
reliability of the 98/99 series and adds an innovative latching concept. This latch bolt and strike design
collaborates to insure the highest level of door opening security. Targeted door openings for this device are
those suffering from violent “pull force” attack. This design delivers over 2000+lbs. of static load force
resistance. In addition to this new level of security, the XP device now requires lower forces-to-open on loaded
or unloaded door openings. This feature adds an attractive balance between security and safety.

To accommodate the installation process, the XP98/99 rim device matches the existing 98/99 rim device
footprint, eliminating costly door prep changes. This will support a quick installation of an XP device to a door
opening that has suffered the effects of violent door attacks or deteriorating door/frame conditions.

The XP98/99 feature is also available in kit form. The XP Retro-fit kit allows for the easy upgrade of existing
98/99 rim devices. The kit will contain the center case, cover, and specified strike for the multiple rim device
applications. The device conforms to ANSI/BHMA 156.3 criteria, and UL panic and fire listings currently held
by the standard 98/99 rim device.

The mechanical strikes designed for the XP device, the 909 (Panic & Fire rated) and the fire rated mullion
strike, the 954, will provide the unique strength and latching security needed in the commercial structures of
today’s marketplace.

Selected mechanical device options are available and are detailed in the current XP98/99 catalog cut.
Compatibility with Von Duprin electric strikes, CM/PRO 993, and E996L trims supports this multi-faceted
product addition to the Von Duprin line. All Von Duprin rim device mechanical trims will also be available for
use with the XP98/99 device.

The same exit device aesthetics are available with the XP device, the smooth 98 series and the grooved 99
series. These aesthetic designs are available in a variety of architectural finishes. This insures the compatibility
of appearance with other Ingersoll Rand door hardware assemblies, thus providing the beauty and performance
needed in today’s commercial markets.

The applications for the XP 98/99 rim device will be on all types of single and double
doors with mullions. Further device features will be developed and introduced as market
demand dictates. The Von Duprin exit device team and A-1 Corporate Hardware stand
ready and willing to answer the call for new and innovative hardware products. This
readiness is the result of our desire to support the development of a safer and more secure
       marketplace.

require electrified hardware that operates at whisper-
quiet levels. The new Von Duprin QEL couples the
reliability and high performance Von Duprin is known for,
with quieter operation that won’t disrupt meetings,
performances or study. In fact, compared to the
competition, Von Duprin offers the quietest overall
operation when operated mechanically and electrically.

VON DUPRIN MULLIONS
A Von Duprin mullion is a structural separation for a set of double doors that are
fabricated from standard frame material and a piece of mullion insert material.
These pieces are screwed together back to back, making a closed frame section.
Von Duprin steel mullion if used to provide single door performance in a double
door opening with a rim device.

Von Duprin key removable steel mullion. Mullions provide single
door performance in double door openings with rim devices. For
use with all Von Duprin Panic rim devices.

When large equipment or furniture must pass through an opening, it makes mullion removal a
simple key cylinder operation. The unit will self-lock when re-installed, without the need to re-use
the cylinder key. The new assembly is available in Von Duprin's 1654, 4954, 9854 and 9954 steel
mullions.

The mullion assembly is ideal for exterior doors and has been tested to over 10,000 operations. It
also has passed static load and impact tests.

VON DUPRIN GUARD-X

GUARD-X provides secure, alarmed code-compliant protection for secondary exits. GUARD-X exit alarm lock
readily identifies the door on which it is mounted as an emergency exit and secures the opening against
unauthorized use. It is ideal for deterring theft in restaurants and retail establishments such as: discount stores,
grocery stores, drug stores, clothing stores and sporting goods stores.

The new Series 2670 Exit Alarm Lock provides secure protection through a large stainless steel deadbolt, which
is 2" x 1/2" (51mm x 13mm) and has over a 3/4" (19mm) throw. The engagement area into the strike is over 1
1/4" (32mm) square inches. The cast aluminum latch case protects the internal mechanism and resists tampering
or vandalism from inside the door. This unit has been tested to withstand up to 1600 pounds of static load force
against the door.

What is ADA?
The American’s with Disbilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law, not a building code. This
act is designed to provide protection for people with disabilities. The law is divided into
four major titles that prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in
Employment (Title 1), Public Service (Title II), Public Accommodations (Title III), and
Telecommunications (Title IV). Title III concerns doors and door control.

What is the intent of ADA, Title III?
Essentially, owners of certain types of buildings must remove barriers and provide
people with disabilities with access equal to, or similar to, that available to the general
public.

How does ADA affect doors?
The ADA defines an “accessible” opening which means, among other things, providing a
door with a minimum 32˝ (813mm) clear opening, easily manipulated handles, a
maximum opening force, a minimum closing time, and capable of opening to at least
90°. LCN Power Operators meet ADA requirements

AD200 OFFLINE LOCK: USER RIGHTS ON LOCK
The AD-200 is a simple, economical solution if no access control
system currently exists in facility, or for openings that don’t require
the control of a networked solution. Since user rights are stored
on the lock, the AD-200 solution is ideal for small to medium size
applications. The Handheld Device (HHD) used in conjunction with
your access control software, allows you to easily add or delete
users and retrieve audits. Lock and unlock schedules, as well as
Time zones and holidays can be programmed for added security

lock if requirements change in the future.

AD250 OFFLINE LOCK: USER RIGHTS ON CARD
The AD-250 is a unique solution in which the credential, not the lock,
carries access rights on a magnetic stripe card. This allows dynamic
rights management on the card without reprogramming each lock in
the facility. And the lock still maintains an audit trail of events at
the door. This makes it a smart and economical solution for campus
                                                                                    Proximity Only Proximity w/ Keypad

upgradable to a networked lock if requirements change in the future.

The Handheld Device (HHD) used in conjunction with your access control software, allows
you to update door files and retrieve audits. Lock and unlock schedules, as well as time zones
and holidays can be programmed for added security and convenience.

AD300 NETWORKED: HARDWIRED LOCK
A hardwired networked solution gives you instant control of your system.
Whether you’re trying to lock down or unlock one door or every door in
your facility, add or remove a user, or simply see the status of the opening
– you can be confident that you’re doing so in real-time, right from your
computer.

The AD-Series combines all the hardware components required for a Keypad Only
complete access control system into one integrated design that includes
the electrified lock, credential reader, request-to-enter and -exit sensors, door position switch
and more. This integrated design saves you both time and money when installing your
system.

AD400 NETWORKED: WIRELESS LOCK
The AD-400 networked wireless system gives you many of the key benefits of a hardwired
access control system – without the wires. This allows you to secure doors that were
traditionally difficult to run wires to in the past – and increase the security throughout your
facility. A wireless solution also allows for a quicker and more cost-efficient installation that
causes minimal disruption to your environment – saving you both time and money.

For reliable wireless communications, Schlage utilizes the 900MHz band to enable longer
transmission ranges and simplify system design. Signal propagation with longer wavelengths
travel a greater distance and penetrate through and around typical building construction
better than signals with shorter wavelengths. Each RF transmission is encrypted with AES-
128 bit keys to provide virtually uncompromisable security.

The AD-Series wireless locks combine all the hardware components required for a complete
access control system into one integrated design that includes the electrified lock, credential
reader, request-to-enter and -exit sensors, door position switch and more. This integrated
design saves you both time and money when installing your system.

In addition, the AD-Series also has advanced intelligence built in. To provide you with more
information about what is going on at each of your openings, a number of status indicators
can be monitored remotely. Each opening can be customized using the large number of
options the AD-Series has to offer.

HHD KIT: SCHLAGE HAND HELD DEVICE
Overview

Schlage Utility Software (SUS) is designed specifically for use on the Handheld
Device (HHD) as the link between your access control management software
and Schlage electronic offline and networked locks and accessories.

This solution consolidates and simplifies programming and managing your
access control system. The SUS and HHD is used to initialize, configure and
test product operation, and also provides an easy way to manage people,
audits, locks and other network panel interface devices for simple access control.
The intuitive screen layout for the SUS provides easy navigation during use.

For offline products the SUS is utilized to transfer access control data, such as authorized user lists, via the HHD to the
locks. The SUS is also utilized to download audit trail information from offline devices to the HHD and then transfer that
data to the access control management software.

In addition the SUS can configure other networked electronic devices (including PIM and PIB) and update firmware
revision updates to the devices as desired.

The HHD connects with Schlage AD-Series electronic locks and accessories via a USB interface and utilizes Active Synch
or Win Mobile Device Manager to communicate with your PC via the USB port. The HHD is also able to connect to the
SPED, KC2, CM, CL, CT500, CT1000, CL Controller and WA-Series PIMs via a serial cable connection.

                                  112
Security and safety in residential halls is a top priority for college campuses of any size today. Students move
into dorm rooms and on-campus housing with personal property of considerable value, including computer
systems and electronics. In addition, personal safety and protection have become critically important elements
of campus security programs.

Features of a well-secured residence hall include:

● All doors, including perimeter and room entryways, controlled by one networked system that records and
monitors everyone who enters or exits the building.
● Access control systems on each floor.
● Security cameras by all residence hall entrances.
● Appropriate interior and exterior lighting.

Locking systems, access control programs and notification systems have become essential security elements
for many campus residential halls. Residential security components found on campuses today include:

● Exterior doors that remain locked part or all of the time. These doors require identification for entry into
the facility. Automatic locking systems provide advanced security with computerized access systems that may be tied into
campus security networks. Manual locking systems require residence hall staff or campus security professionals to lock
the doors.
● Access-controlled doors. Latches can be electronically controlled by the campus security network system.
Doors must be readily opened by a push from the inside and meet a number of other safety requirements. They cannot
include delayed egress locks, but otherwise may be installed in virtually any school building.

Online access control systems usually have methods to monitor events and record what happens at the point
of entry. Offline systems rely on cardholder identification and access information programmed into a reader
device physically located at the door.

● Access card control systems. Smart cards that carry unique student identifiers can be programmed to
allow access into certain facilities, including residential halls. Card readers installed at the entrances allow access to the
building verify identification before allowing persons in the building.
● Automatic door closers and locking systems. These self-closing doors reduce incidences of unwanted
access into dorm rooms and residence hallways.

                                                          113
● Video surveillance systems. Video cameras can record everyone entering or exiting the building. In a
networked system, the recordings can be received in real-time by the campus security network located away from the
residence hall. Cameras also provide a visual deterrent to would-be criminals.

An almost universal problem with residence hall security focuses on student apathy toward security procedures and a lack
of awareness about potential threats to their personal or physical safety. Students and staff members oftentimes prop
open interior and exterior doors. Some residents allow nonresidents or persons not known to them to enter a building
without proper identification. They provide access codes and keys to other people without concern for the safety of
themselves and their fellow residents.

One method for preventing access to groups of nonresidents is to install a locked vestibule (or mantrap) where only one
person can enter at a time. Anti-passback features on access cards force cardholders to use their credentials to exit and
enter. The card is only valid when used in the correct sequence. Photo identification on cards enables resident assistants
to check photos on the access credentials.

Central to the success of a residence hall security program is ongoing training – of staff and students – as well as strict
enforcement of campus security policies. Safety personnel may be assigned as liaisons to residential halls. Student-led
committees may help to establish security rules that are consistent with campus guidelines. In some cases, financial
penalty systems may help to curtail security violations.

Tips

1) - Obstructed openings - Sometimes a stopgap solution to excess supplies is to place them next to the door and stock
them later. Even in these well-intended situations, patient and staff safety can be affected since this action may allow the
spread of smoke and fire beyond the confines of smoke compartments.

2) Obstructed hallways - Wheel chairs, gurneys, carts can start to pile up in hallways, preventing impeding access to
stairwells and exit doors. Make sure the hallways stay clear.

3) Improper fire rating on doors - Painted over or missing fire rating labels is consistently one of the top violations.
Ensuring that painters understand the importance of not covering door and frame labels can significantly reduce the
potential for this violation. Where necessary, replace damaged doors with doors that have proper fire ratings. Regardless
of the training provided to painters or specifications given to companies replacing doors, never close out a project without
an inspection and commissioning process.

4) Broken door seals - Wear and tear will affect all doors eventually. A door that might close but not seal properly may

                                                         114
allow smoke and fire to penetrate an opening much quicker.

5) Doors that do not properly close - a door that doesn't close is a door that can't be latched or prevent the spread of
fire. Often, fixing a broken door is as simple as a broken level or hinge adjustment.

6) Doors that don't self-close properly - In many places, Life Safety code requires the door to close and latch on it's
own without impediment. If doors aredesigned to close and latch on within human intervention but fail to do so, they
should be the closer repaired or replaced immediately.

7) Missing or unmarked designated fire exits – Exits and exit egress pathways that are not clearly marked create a
dangerous condition particularly in smoke filled hallways. In an emergency, occupants need to have to have clearly
designated and identified egress routes.

As the old saying goes, "the devil is in the details." The smallest infraction can endanger the safety of your
occupants.

To most hospital employees, door openings perform a multitude of functions. They provide security and privacy, minimize
the potential for infection, help protect confidential information and communications, route people though buildings, act as
fire and smoke barriers, protect means of egress, and help regulate environmental conditions. Of course, sometimes
doors are viewed as an impediment to one’s activities and are propped open. Most importantly, doors are designed to
help us safely manage our facilities and provide requisite security functions.

Managing these openings is vital to the safety, security, and efficiency of every healthcare facility. Understanding how
doors work and interact within the built environment is essential to ensuring occupant safety. Each year, standards
organizations commit significant resources in collaborative efforts designed to enhance life safety and equipment
performance. As a result, standards are updated on a cyclical basis in order to take advantage of advances in materials,
technology, and emergency management practices.

With such attention given to the form and function of openings, making certain these are designed consistent with
applicable building and life safety codes, are properly installed, and operate as expected can be a daunting task.
Education for building code officials and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) must be a continuous process. In order to
ensure occupant safety, healthcare facility owners and operators need to have the same requisite knowledge.
