16
17 Whereas, the ancestors of today’s Native American Indians
18 inhabited the lands of the present day South Carolina; and
19
20 Whereas, Native American Indians have traditionally exhibited
21 respect for our finite natural resources through a deep reverence
22 for the Earth; and
23
24 Whereas, many ancestors suffered and perished in the lands to
25 which their descendents now maintain a powerful spiritual
26 connection, as is evidenced by their customs and legends; and
27
28 Whereas, Indian people are resilient and determined to preserve,
29 develop, and transmit to future generations their unique cultural
30 identities; and
31
32 Whereas, Native American Indians have served with valor in all of
33 the Nation’s wars from the Revolutionary War through current
34 operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world; and
35
36 Whereas, Native American Indians have made distinct and
37 important contributions to the United States, South Carolina, and
38 the rest of the world in many fields, including agriculture,
39 medicine, music, language, and art, and they have distinguished
40 themselves as inventors, entrepreneurs, spiritual leaders, and
41 scholars; and
42

     [1015] 1
1 Whereas, such statewide recognition of the contributions of Native
2 American Indians to the United States and South Carolina will
3 encourage self-esteem, pride, self awareness, and respect in Native
 4 American Indians; and
 5
6 Whereas, such statewide recognition will allow all South
7 Carolinians of all backgrounds to demonstrate their respect of and
8 admiration for Native American Indians for the richness of their
9 contribution to the political, cultural, and economic life of the State
10 of South Carolina; and
11
12 Whereas, the National Museum of the American Indian was
13 established within the Smithsonian Institution as a living memorial
14 to the Native Peoples and their traditions. Now, therefore,
15
16 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
17 concurring:
