You are about to embark on a publicity and public relations simulation. You will take on two roles.

     1. The company (in teams of two or three)

You are the public spokesperson for a corporation that has recently come across a public relations
nightmare. Your job is the following:

          1. Following a brief report provided by Mr. Kearns on the situation, explain to the reporters
gathered at the press conference what happened, being sure to ‘spin’ the story so it doesn’t
sound so bad for you – but do NOT lie, as you will academically punished for doing so. You
may use PowerPoint for visual aids you would like to display.
          2. Explain what actions your company is doing in order to correct this problem and/or make
             sure this never happens again.
          3. Announce a public relations activity that your company will be presenting with the creation
of a poster to hand out to each reporter publicizing the event

General Expectations

     - A brief history of the company, and its current state
     - A list of the positive things your company does
     - A positive, ‘spun’ outline of the events that took place
     - Mention of your upcoming corporate public event
     - Take and answer questions from the reporters

Marketing expectations

It is expected that your presentation will include information on:

     - brand name
     - target market for a product the company makes
     - product life cycle for one of your products
     - pricing strategy the company uses for one of its products
     - where the company fits in with its competitors in the price quality grid
     - An explanation of how Awareness, interest, desire and action were used in your public relations poster

     - include appropriate slide transitions

     2. The reporters (individual)

When not presenting the information, you will be playing the role of the reporters. Your job is to gather
and record as much information as you can from the presentations. You must do this for each of the
presentations. After the press conferences, you will be assigned one of the other group’s presentations to
create a newspaper editorial report about. This report should answer the basic questions – who, what,
where, when, why and how and include throughout what you believe is right and wrong in the situation.
Remember, you will not be told which company you are to write about until after the presentations have
been completed.
