Scientists do not
fully understand
the causes of El
       Nino
The effects of
La Nina tend
  to be the
 opposite of
 those of El
    Nino
 Global warming
may exacerbate
 the effects of El
Nino and La Nina
 El Nino and La Nina
cause a disruption in
 climate throughout
      the world
 This disruption
includes severe
  droughts in
some areas and
severe flooding
   in others.
    Why is it
important that we
 understand the
effects of ENSO?
 The 1982-83 El Nino event
cost the world $13 billion and
 2,000 lives and the 1997-98
  event cost the world $33
            billion
       and 2,100 lives.
