A Mobil Night at the Opera – with pic
Hobsons Bay City Council, Opera Australia, Orchestra Victoria and ExxonMobil will treat music
lovers to a free community concert featuring some of the best-loved arias.
More than 800 people are expected to enjoy a program of popular opera songs and music,
including excerpts from Puccini’s La Bohème, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro
and Cosi Fan Tutte, as well as the famous ‘Flower Duet’ from Lakmé and ‘Votre Toast’ (the
Toreador Song) from Bizet’s Carmen.
The one-hour concert will be performed by a 50-piece orchestra from Orchestra Victoria,
conducted by Tom Woods, and some of Opera Australia’s biggest stars.
The Council is proud to support arts and culture in Melbourne’s west.
The concert is on Thursday, 28th July from 7.30pm at the Williamstown Town Hall. While the
concert is free, seating is limited. Tickets are available from the Box Office at Williamstown

Wanted: Young Bands and Musicians
Are you a young musician in Hobsons Bay? Are you a member of a young local band?
Hobsons Bay City Council’s Youth Services team are looking for local young bands and
musicians to compete in the 2011 Battle of the Bands.
Register by 29th July for the chance to go on and perform at the regional finals, then at Push
The event is on Friday, 26th August from 6.30pm at the Laverton Skate Centre, 2 Oakdene

Proposed Road Closure
The Council is proposing to close the driveway link between Knox Court and Bendick Court,
Altona Meadows following consultation with local residents.
Residents of Knox Court, Bendick Court and other interested parties have the opportunity to
make a written submission by 23rd August or request they appear in person to be heard in
support of their submission at a future Council meeting.
Residents will be notified of the Council’s decision regarding the closure of the driveway link
after consideration of any submissions received and a formal report from VicRoads.

You only have a few more days to have your say on the draft Altona Central Sports Precinct
The draft plan includes Grant Reserve, Nevitt Reserve, Cherry Lake and surrounding parkland,
Kim Reserve and Fell Reserve .
A new path connecting Kororoit Creek to a proposed wetland at the western entry point to
Cherry Lake, a junior soccer facility, upgrades to access roads, car parks and safety lighting,
additional landscaping, redevelopment of the accessible Cherry Lake playground, new athletics
facilities and a new play space all form part of the draft plan.

What’s Happening at the Libraries?
The Hotels of Williamstown
Over the first 75 years of the Williamstown’s life there was up to 40 hotels and 500 licensees.
Historian Ian Rae will draw upon Bruce Tait’s book ‘Pubs of Williamstown: a historical guide’ to
deliver a fascinating talk on Thursday, 28th July from 2.00pm to 3.30pm at the Williamstown

Free Home Library Service
Hobsons Bay Libraries offers a free Home Library Service to local residents who are
homebound or unable to visit the library due to disability or ill health, as well as primary carers
who find it difficult to visit a library as they are caring for a homebound person.

Application for a Planning Permit
Luka Mrkonjic Town Planning Services has lodged an application for the construction of four
double storey dwellings at 41 Grieve Parade, Altona.
The application and supporting documentation may be inspected at the Hobsons Bay Civic
Centre 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, or via Greenlight, the Council’s online permit
management system, at www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au
Any person who may be affected by the granting of the permit may object or make other
submissions to the Council in writing, including the reasons for an objection and stating how the
objector would be affected by 3rd August, 2011. Objectors will be advised of the decision.
