Press Release April 2011
GROUNDBREAKING OPERA FOR BABIES
The Spark Children’s Arts Festival returns to Leicester from 31st May until 12th June. This
year, the festival presents an incredible experience for babies and their grown ups with
BabyO, from Scottish Opera. BabyO is a perfect introduction to music which will leave little
ones wide-eyed and open-mouthed.
BabyO will be at Embrace Arts on 10th and 11th June – and is for babies as young as six
months old. Enter a magical secret garden full of busy bees, ducks and splashing fish where
you’ll meet the singers and begin your special adventure. The show is part of the First Spark
strand of the festival programme designed especially for pre-school children. The melodies
follow the musical patterns of nursery rhymes to fascinate and mesmerise little ones with
their newly developed sense of hearing.
Hearing is one of the first senses to develop in the womb and it has been shown that babies
will respond to their mother's voice as early as 20 weeks in pregnancy while vision takes
longer. BabyO combines recorded music and live singing with sounds and words that babies
will recognise and understand. Techniques are used to emulate the babies’ experience of
language and sound during their development in the womb. The vocals vary to musically
mirror and enhance the scenery, props and the movements of the singers in the performance.
Jane Davidson, Scottish Opera’s Director of Education and Outreach says:
“We’re so pleased to bring BabyO to this year's Spark Children's Arts Festival. I hope that the
babies of the Leicester area love it as much as those in Scotland did!”
BabyO is a groundbreaking opera created especially for babies aged 6 – 18 months.
