PURPOSE           To define the policy for the Department of Pathology for delegation
                  of some functions (e.g., review of QC data, procedure manuals,
                  proficiency testing performance, etc.) to others.

DEFINITION        None

STANDARDS         Laboratory Director may choose to delegate functions to the
                  Chief Technologist, Laboratory Supervisor and Senior Clinical
                  Technologist.

Responsible Person         Duties and Responsibilities
Chief Technologist         The Chief Technologist is responsible for the day-to-day
(Technical Supervisor)     administrative and technical oversight of the laboratory
                           as defined in the job description for Chief Technologist,
                           Department of Pathology and in the Federal Register,
                           February 1992, Section 493.1449. The Chief
                           Technologist additionally may assume responsibilities
                           such as procedure manual review, proficiency testing
                           review, and others as designated by the Laboratory
                           Director.
Laboratory Supervisor      The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day
(General Supervisor)       administrative and technical supervision of laboratory
                           operation and personnel within a particular section or
                           sections, as defined in the Performance Plan for
                           Laboratory Supervisor, Department of Pathology, and in
                           the Federal Register, February 1992, Section 493.1463.
                           The Laboratory Supervisor additionally may assume
                           responsibilities as designated by the Laboratory Director
                           or the Chief Technologist.
Senior Clinical            The Senior Clinical Technologist may be responsible for

                           oversight of a particular project or laboratory function, or
                           other duties as defined in the Performance Plan for
                           Senior Clinical Technologist, Department of Pathology.
                           The Senior Clinical Technologist additionally may
                           assume responsibilities as designated by the Laboratory
                           Director, Chief Technologist, or Laboratory Supervisor.
                           These responsibilities may include review of work
                           performed by technologists qualifying for performance of
                           high-complexity testing under Federal Register, April 24,
                           1995, Section 493.1489 (b)(5)(ii).
