My good friend, Samantha Schaffer, worked as a stage technician last summer and introduced this program to me. After conducting a bit of research, I was excited to find that Opera New Jersey offers a marketing internship because being part of a marketing team has a constant focus as a Theatre Arts Management major at Ithaca College. After having being exposed to opera for the past few years and applying my knowledge acquired in TAM positions, I feel that the marketing internship would be a great medium for implementing my education. For most of my high school career, I worked with a local non-profit company by the name of Pinenda Lyric Opera, a branch of the Pineda Conservatory of the Performing Arts based in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. After performing in two consecutive operas, I worked closely with the administrative team for a work-study project at the conclusion of my senior year. My tasks ranged from various set and prop construction to ticket sales to local publicity; ultimately I had touched upon a lot of topics I would soon learn about in college. As a TAM (as the major is affectionately known), I have the opportunity to hone my people skills as a head usher for main stage productions; utilize the ProVenue ticketing system during box office shifts; contribute input as a member of the marketing team; and collaborate with all other majors in the IC theatre department in order to ensure that our main stage and student-directed shows will sell. I am already very eager to apply what I’ve learned in an outside setting. The amount of student internships available at the McCarter Theatre seems like an indication of an inviting and congenial organization. The Marketing Internship at Opera New Jersey is especially appealing to me because my interests in arts management specifically revolve around marketing for non-profit organizations.
