The Bible and Science

Contending for the faith
Robert Colvin also commented on The Holy Bible's link.

the oil he mentioned took about 65,000,000 years to form under the gulf. Oh! Why and
based upon what irrefutable evidence?
At this point, it matters not how long it took to form the oil, the fact is, all of the
ingredients needed to form that crude was accrued, and buried at one and the same time,
by the same cataclysmic, killer force. So, the question is, what was the driving force
behind that assembly, or, that accrual? Please do not tell me about some 100k year build-
up! What killed them? That force had to have been the same all over the earth, given
that crude is found on about the same level, wherever it is found, through the world. It
being impossible to form crude without tremendous pressure, heat, and an airless, airtight
enclosure, explain the presence of more than half a mile of dirt and rock that covers all
known oil fields (including shale here in the US and the oil sands of Canada, and now as
of late, Utah; as well as all of the coal fields! The 24 shale gas fields here in the US are
covered by dirt and rock between 1.6 and 1.85 miles deep! This did not happen over 65
million years, nor did it take that long to transform 48,000 square miles of ‘fish’ in to gas
that became trapped in Pennsylvania’s Marcellus shale. What killed all those water
creatures at one time, and, how was all that dirt hoisted above this stockpile of dead
carcasses, so as to form the airtight mantel, vital to the prevention of decay and the
promotion of the essential, clean transformation to methane gas?).
Given that the carcasses of mammals are the chief ingredients in the formation of crude,
how did you get that many off shore, in the Gulf (or, any where else on earth, in off shore
locations, for that matter), under 4 miles of water, and 1 mile of dirt? How do you
account for the presence of the remains of marine life, in the form of large, dangerous and
potentially deadly quantities of natural gas, mixed in with the remains of dead land
mammals (on shore, well inland, as well as offshore!)?
all the flood evidence he mentioned was caused by plate tectonics not flash floods. most
of the land masses on earth were under the sea at one time or another. Interesting! So
one authoritative “skeptic/critic” vehemently disqualifies the confidence of another.
By “land masses”, I shall take the liberty of assuming you mean, the seven continents.
The fact is sir, it would be impossible to get a rise in sea level sufficient to completely
cover one “land mass” or continent, without having an adverse flood event on the other
continents as well.
So then, at any rate, like the former antagonist, you don’t dispute either the possibility or
the practicality of a global flood—you just don’t think that “God” deserves the credit,
right? In fact, your comment stipulates the occurrence of multiple, or, many floods
global floods (complete rubbish, of course, but in so stating, by extrapolation, that is what
you are saying!)!
The Bible says that the Genesis Flood was caused by a break-up of the “fountains of the
deep”—which certainly would imply if not mandate a violent movement of the earth’s
tectonic plates—as much as by an opening of the windows of heaven or torrential rains,
from above. It nowhere states that the flood was the product of rain, alone.
“Death Pits” of Tar in LA
the bones he mentioned in LA. are from animals that got stuck in the tar and
decomposed right there. Fine! Not a problem! But, the fact remains, the animals are
there, in huge quantities—according to some accounts. And, they are not just animals,
they are animals and birds of a diverse variety (most now extinct), you would not find
together in any kind of a setting, under normal circumstances. Some of them were not
even indigenous to American soil when Colombus came—like the horse, the elephant,
woolly mammoth, and mastodon, for instance. So, the $64K question is, what happened?
They obviously lived here, on this continent at one time, at the same time. What drove
them to that location, together, into those tar pits, so that they got “stuck” therein, so as to
decompose? To say that that many animals, along with clams and fish, simply wandered
into that area, only to find themselves “stuck” is pure “bull___”!
men lived 900 years and noah didn't have children until he was 500 years old? Indeed I
do believe! And, you poor handling of the above issues leaves your head right squarely
and precisely where you wish it were not, I am afraid!
Noah’s Animals: How were they fed?
Robert wrote: "noah had to feed the animals for almost a full year. this calls for the magic
card again." Truth, my friend! The ultimate responsibility for all of those animals fell
upon the shoulders of the One who ordered Noah to undertake the project, in the first
place. Thus, the “magic card” was dealt and played by God Himself. It was He who
made certain as to all of the provisions needed to survive the Flood. The Bible nowhere
relegates sole responsibility to Noah alone. Furthermore, he had 120 years to get his
house, or, his “boat” in order!
Light, the Sun and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Robert wrote: "god created light on the first day. he created the sun on the fourth day. do
you see a problem here?" No! Who told you that “light” was limited only to that by
which we have sight? All students of particle or quantum physics know better! Further,
who told you that the sun was a producer of “only” that by means of which we see? We
need more than visible light to survive down here, don’t we? Ya’ think?
What God actually created was what we call today the “electromagnetic spectrum”,
which was itself, subject to the darkness. That is, the darkness that completely engulfed
the earth on the first day of its Genesis 1“retrofit” (not the original ‘creation’!), was
impervious to the passage of electromagnetic energy (the powerful and deadly “black
hole” is quite possibly a remnant of what original darkness was like, before God diluted
or ‘weakened’ it, so as to accommodate the presence of that electromagnetic spectrum,
The electromagnetic spectrum, as doubtless you know—oh, thou inform-med one!—is
comprised of all the ‘photon’ based energy forms we know as radio (microwave &
television), infrared, visible, ultraviolet, x-ray and gamma radiation (relative to the likes
of our main sequence star; we know that there are other energy forms more powerful than
any of these by virtue of the presence of giants and super-giants among red and blue
stars). The sun directly is a producer of only deadly gamma radiation in its pressure
packed core (230,000 miles of pure, unadulterated hell; 340 billion times the pressure on
earth at sea level; 27 million degrees, Fahrenheit!), which after the equivalent of roughly
two million years of travel through the various layers of the sun, emerges as or is released
in all of the other forms. Visible light and infrared light (heat) reach the earth—as well as
do x-rays (blocked by the earth’s protective bubble) and ultra-violet light (of which only
uv-A rays pass through into our atmosphere; uv-B rays are more dangerous, uv-C rays
would kill everything living).
Thus, the long and the short of my point being, when God spoke of light, most assuredly,
clearly, He was not speaking with reference only to what we think of as “visible” light.
The sun is only the mechanical instrument by means of which we benefit from the
pronouncement “let there be light”. There are many different man-made ways of
generating the various aspects of the electromagnetic spectrum available to men today.
Why then must there be a “problem here”? Since the creation, until recently in our times,
none of these avenues existed nor was any even conceivable. How was the reality of the
spectrum non-realizable because there was no way known to man by which to produce
My point is, all the scientific evidence in the world shows that the electromagnetic
spectrum, light (in all of its assorted forms and denominations), is not entirely dependent
upon the sun. The sun is merely the vehicle by which the two forms we need to live is
produced, packaged and shipped to earth.

Lot’s Daughters & Sodom and Gomorrah
Robert wrote: "do you think lot 's offer of his virgin daughters to the angry crowd in stead
of the angles of the lord was a good idea? is insest ok?" Short answer: No! I personally
do not think it was the most rational or humane of suggestions, to offer one’s own flesh
and blood for what Lot knew would be for the satisfaction on most base sexual abuse.
God in the Bible never ever glosses over the shortcomings and failings of the people he
chooses to use in any of his plans. No effort is ever made to make them look like
something they’re not. They are shown for what or who they are, warts and all. They are
people not unlike you and me. That said, Lot was simply following his own instincts, or,
his own idea in terms of how to navigate an increasingly dire, and, potentially deadly
situation involving what he knew to be gross immorality. After all, he had lived in that
culture for quite some time. Thus, he knew the people and their culture. There were no
laws—civil or Divine—to govern or to curtail his reaction or conduct.
The same is true in the case of the decision and actions of Lot’s daughters. In short, no!
Incest is not ok. “Situation ethics”, I would guess is the best definition, guiding the
decisions and outcome of either scenario. In the absence of laws or divine guidance
and/or prohibitions, one follows what ones “thinks” or “feels” is the best course of action,
in light of whatever the situation at hand. Thus, their actions were, at least in part, no
doubt, shaped by the culture in which they had been born and reared.
The Sabbath: Did violators deserve capital punishment?
Robert wrote: "do you think I should be stoned to death for working on the sabath?" One
can only concur that the penalty does seem to be a bit “over the top” or extreme for the
“crime”. Nonetheless, when one considers God’s overall summation of His ‘chosen’
people—a stiff-necked, rebellious people—one can only conclude that it must have been
deemed highly unlikely that the Israelites would have bothered to submit to any Sabbath
observance, where there was no such threat, hanging over their heads.
Waters of Noah’s Flood: Where’d they go?
Robert wrote: "it's time to get the magic card out. we need to account for the 550,000,000
cubic miles of water that disappered after the flood. can you even concieve of a number
like that? cubic MILES!!!" Go figure! It’s a flood of waters brought on as much by a
horrendous quaking of the earth, on land and in the oceans—created by breaking up of
underground rock so as to generate the pressure needed to force underground water up in
deadly jets—as by hellish rains. The water wasn’t there before the flood, yet it was there
during and throughout the flood—by consequence of the rain and the “fountains of the
deep”. How hard can it be then, to imagine that by all accounts and measures, it simply
returned to where it came from—namely, the skies in the form of clouds through
evaporation, the oceans, the lakes and the underground aquifers—like it always does
following any modern, local flooding (There are lakes or oceans of water, underground,
