KNAUF MP75 DEMO PROMPTS SPEC CHANGE AND BIG SAVINGS

A simple plastering demonstration on site was enough for a main contractor to switch the

specification for 24,000m2 of internal masonry walls to Knauf MP75 machine applied

one coat Projection Plaster. Used in place of traditional two coat, hand applied plaster,

Knauf MP75 saved time and delivered other significant benefits at Kingsway Hospital in

Derby. Up to three times faster than manual plastering, fast drying Knauf MP75

Projection Plaster enables a three man team to complete up to 150m2 of high quality

plaster every day.

Main contractor Costain is building the new Kingsway Hospital facilities for the

Derbyshire Mental Health Services NHS Trust. The £30 million project includes four

buildings – three residential units with accommodation for 36, 14 and eight patients

respectively, and a clinical support services building.

As part of its group-wide focus on innovation, Costain agreed to try Knauf MP75 on two

walls – and promptly switched the entire interior plastering job to the Knauf system. The

plastering, which also included sections of curved wall, was completed by specialist

interiors subcontractors Amba Interiors and Shades of Kuler.
Nick Johnson, Director of Amba Interiors, says: “With MP75 we reduced the manpower

requirement on site by 50%, which is good in management and safety terms. We are now

looking to take MP75 forward to other contracts – it has been a positive experience for

us, increasing our flexibility and enabling us to offer contractors big savings.”

David Kelleher, Director of Shades of Kuler, has been machine-applying plaster for 16

years, having trained in Germany. He says: “In the correct hands, MP75 is unbeatable on

costing, speed and quality – and it is fast becoming the plaster of choice. We are now

setting up a training programme as part of our plan to get more teams of qualified

machine plasterers on the road in 2009.”

Richard Wood, Costain Construction Manager at Kingsway Hospital, says Knauf MP75

cut the plastering schedule from 28 weeks to 16 weeks, providing more leeway for the

other finishing trades. He says: “For us the speed of application was the big advantage,

but we were also impressed by the cleanliness of the machine plastering operation. The

finish is magnificent.”

MP75 Projection Plaster is specially formulated for one-coat application on most interior

wall surfaces – particularly brickwork, blockwork and concrete. MP75 is machine-

applied to a wall in short horizontal bands, then simply ruled and floated manually for a

durable, smooth white finish. With a three man team able to complete up to 150m2 a day,
MP75 is among the most productive building materials on the market. MP75 is nailable,

abrasive proof and fire retarding – and it is ideal for decorating or tiling. It is available at

builders’ merchants in 25kg bags, which yield about 28 litres of wet plaster to cover

approximately 2.5m2 at the recommended nominal thickness of 13mm.

MP75 spearheads Knauf Drywall’s range of high productivity machine applied plasters

for use on masonry and plasterboard. These include MPFinish for a superb skim finish on

plasterboard, and the new range of Knauf Readymix Plasters of fast track machine

application on most types of walls and ceilings.

Knauf Drywall manufactures a full range of plasters, plasterboards, insulating laminates,

dry flooring, drywall accessories, and metal sections for domestic, commercial and public

sector applications. Knauf Drywall pioneered carbon neutral plasterboard in the UK with

Knauf Futurepanel. Knauf Drywall also actively promotes recycling from building sites

and has a zero waste policy in its energy efficient factories at Sittingbourne in Kent and

Immingham on Humberside.
