TSUNAMIS’ FAST WINTER SEASON
WINTER METRO CHAMPS
The Tsunami Swim Team had its most successful winter season so far. At the Metro
Section Winter Champs the swimmers who participated had their lifetime best swims
earning precious points for the team.
In the 10 & under age group Shelley Anthopoulos, Lauren Hickey, Ryan Kawaguchi,
Sean Khansari, Julianna Lai, Stephanie Meyer, William Robles, Winfred Wang and
Justin Yu proved that the Tsunamis have a new wave of talent on the rise. They not only
bettered their times but they demonstrated a great competitive spirit along with improved
The Tsunamis are becoming stronger in the 11& up age category as well. Kelly Chang,
John Chu, Ryan Khansari, Merritt Muter, Chris Olson, Turner Romey, and Shan Szeto
contributed with very good swims for the Tsunamis to place second overall in the
medium sized teams. The meet was held in Bellflower on December 6-7, 2008.
DECEMBER INVITE IN LAS VEGAS
The Tsunamis had 10 swimmers to qualify for the Age Group Championship in Las
Vegas on December 11-14, 2008: John Chu, Alison Day, Nicholas Gott, Ryan
Kawaguchi, Javier Lopez, Merritt Muter, J.P. Shohfi, Kevin Tie, Nora Titus and Martina
Wong. Our swimmers stepped up to the challenging competition and returned home with
improved personal times. In the recent history of the Tsunamis this meet was the one
where we had the largest representation in one of the fastest age group meets of the
Tsunami swimmers are maintaining a high profile on the Southern California swimming
scene. John Chu before he advanced to a new age group, as a 10 & under swimmer made
the Southern California Top 16 list in his freestyle and breastroke events.
Javier Lopez was selected into the Southern California All Star Team for a special meet,
the Swim Festival, held on January 10, 2009 at the Commerce Aquatic Center. His
stellar performance helped his team dominate the Swim Festival.
TEAM USA FOR THE MACCABI GAMES
Nicholas Gott in turn was selected to represent Team USA, Junior Team, at the Maccabi
Games to be held in Israel in mid-July. Based on his results, Nicholas is one of the 12
Junior swimmers selected from the entire USA to participate at these prestigious
The first age group meet of the year held at the Bellflower Aquatic Center gave the
opportunity to our swimmers to improve their times and to make some new cuts for the
upcoming Junior Olympic Championships. Our novice swimmers showed great
improvement in their personal best times like Shelly Anthopolous, Jocelyn Gee, Michael
Ho, Maggie Ireland, Kathryn McCullough, Stephanie Meyer, Kevin and Kyle San,
Tiffany Shi and Keeby Tie. Our more seasoned swimmers had some very strong swims
placing in the top of the competition: John Chu, Alison and Kyle Day, Ryan Kawaguchi,
Julianna Lai, Carina Lee, Jorge Lopez, Merritt Muter, Turner Romey, John Scott,
Michelle Shi, Michael and Lucy Thompson, Nora Titus, Derek Yeh and Tiffanny Yuen.
Three of our swimmers, Nicholas Gott, Javier Lopez and Kevin Tie were already
qualified for the upcoming Junior Olympics but at this meet in Bellflower each of them
not only improved their times in all their races but they added new qualifying events to
Javier Lopez excelled at the Spring 2009 JOs by making finals in several events and 5th
in the 50 fly, 8th in the IM and 11th in the 100 back. He also had lifetime bests in the 100
fly and 200 IM events. Javier also made the Top 16 fastest swimmers’ list in Southern
California in the 50 fly.
For his first JO, Kevin Tie had a remarkable showing by having lifetime best swims in
the freestyle events he made the cuts in; 50, 100 & 200.
Nicholas Gott also improved his times in his signature events, the 100 & 200 back while
having great swims in the freestyle and breaststroke events.
The Tsunami coaches, Gyongyver Sovago, Heather Pearson, Kerri Lumbert and Patrick
McCullough are pleased with the team’s performance this fall/winter season and are
looking forward to the meets of the spring and summer seasons.
