Lower Back Pain in Pregnancy
The Cause of Lower Back Pain in Pregnancy

Lower back pain is suffered by men and women alike, and problems which result in conditions
such as nerve damage and lumbar strain – for example, arthritis, an injury, or wear and tear of
the back muscles – can often be the cause of lower back pain.

However, lower back pain in pregnancy is the most common pain suffered by women during
their term.

Whilst in general, men and women suffer from lower back pain for much the same reasons,
pregnancy is one particular cause of pain which is restricted to women. While it is quite natural
for women to experience back pain when they are in the early stages of pregnancy, in some
women, this can continue, often until the birth is over.

Quite a large number of women tend to experience lower back pain in pregnancy. Balancing
their body becomes difficult for women as they gain weight due to the growth of the baby, and
consequently, they have to pull their upper body back to support the extra weight they are
carrying at the front. In this case the pain experienced by women in their lower back is caused
by the significant pressure that is put on that area due to the weight they have gained.

During pregnancy, many parts of a woman’s body are strained because of the changes that
temporarily occur during this phase, as a result of which, general muscle pain in the lower back
is often experienced. Under such circumstances, as pregnancy continues, sitting and standing
can both prove to be quite painful for women.

Performing exercises can be a very effective way for pregnant women to gain some relief from
the lower back pain they suffer during pregnancy. The abdomen, back and legs are sustained by
specific muscles in the body, and those muscles can be extended and reinforced by exercises,
which can help to alleviate the pain in the lower back.

Two great forms of exercise that can be performed by women who are in the early stages of
pregnancy are swimming and walking. These exercises will not only be good for their
cardiovascular health, but will also strengthen and tone their back, front and their legs. It can
even prove to be helpful for women if they perform moderate exercises and stretches.

Lower back pain in pregnancy has a tendency of worsening over time; however, exercises can
help women to gain relief from the pain.
