02. Introduction

A router is an electronic wireless device used to control and manage data packet transmission

over a local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN) or the internet. Routers determine

the way in which signals are to be transmitted depending on a pre-designed infrastructure

requirement. Moreover, routers have the capability to proactively identify other networking

devices, thereby ensuring a seamless and effective data packet transmission. Hence, routers

can be designed for static or dynamic routing. In Enterprises, routers are fast evolving from being

a mere routing device to a more intelligent network device with additional capabilities. These

features include multi-service functionalities such as ensuring security, enabling multiple

applications, superior traffic management, and providing multiple services, integrated voice

and video conference, within the same device. The evolution of integration router modules

within routers has reduced network administration burdens
