      02. Introduction
A Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) is a device that is used in optical fiber
networks. The device enables end-users to add, block, pass, or redirect modulated infrared (IR)
and visible light beams of multiple wavelengths. ROADM equipment is used in systems that utilize
wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). There are two similar types of ROADM technology that
are presently in use. The wavelength blocking technology is the older version of ROADM and
involves initiating a wavelength chance in the signal to accommodate a given channel. In the
planar light-wave circuit (PLC) technology, the conversion process found in wavelength
blocking technology is still present, but it is streamlined.

The ROADM Equipment market in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region is expected
to witness increased adoption among organizations, and the market is expected to post a
CAGR of 26 percent during the period 2010–2014. Organizations in the EMEA region are currently
facing increasing challenges in managing growing network traffic. Hence, they are forced to
      adopt ROADM equipment.
