REQUIRED EXAMINATIONS: Written tests will be given evaluating vocabulary and comprehension
skills. Homework assignments are to be done and submitted regularly to
the instructor. A final exam may be required.
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE: Emphasis on vocabulary building, word analysis skills, reading
comprehension, and dictionary usage. Additional assignments and
reading are found at the ANGEL website. Individualized work is available
if necessary.
TEXTBOOK: Cause & Effect Fourth Edition by Ackert and Lee
PURPOSE AND GOALS OF COURSE:
To assist students in improving reading comprehension skills and increasing vocabulary skills.
To help students improve their writing skills so that they can successfully compete in EN132 or above.
PERFORMANCE/LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to understand literal statements found in
reading materials and textbooks.
2. Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to understand thoughts or concepts that
are not literal.
3. Develop and expand comprehension skills necessary to identify the main idea of reading
selections.
4. Develop and expand vocabulary skills necessary to read and understand written information.
An emphasis will be placed on context clues.
5. Develop and expand student writing ability in English.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is essential to success in the class; therefore, limit absences to no more than 4 a
semester. Additional absences can affect your final grade in the class. If you stop attending class
and do not formally withdraw, you will receive an F.
Attendance is also required at the ANGEL website. Students should visit the website at least
twice a week for readings, extra practice, announcements., etc.
EVALUATION:
Satisfactory Completion of homework assignments 1/2 of final grade
Unit Examinations 1/2 of Final Grade
(Final Examination 1/4 of Final Grade – optional)
MAKE-UP POLICY:
Make-up tests will not be given. If you miss one test, the grades you have will be averaged with no
penalty. If you miss more than one test, you will receive a 0 for the test missed.
GRADING POLICY: The grading system is:
A = 90-100 Excellent
B = 80-89 Good
C = 70-79 Fair
D = 60-69 Failing
If a student does not finish the assignments needed to complete this level, he/she will receive an F. The
student will need to register in the same level and pay for the classes again the next semester. This action
could cause problems with financial aid.
It is possible but difficult to skip the next level: EN132. If you want more information about his please
