Job Title:        Fundraising Manager        Location:            The Sussex Beacon and local area

Hours:            37.5 per week              Salary:              £34,125

    Donor and Fundraising Administrator (22.5 hpw)
    Communications Officer (22.5 hpw)
    Half Marathon Project Manager (22.5 hpw)
    Half Marathon Volunteer Co-ordinator (15 hpw for 6 months)
    Half Marathon Race Co-ordinator (15 hpw for 6 months)
    Sussex Beacon Community Fundraising Committee and other Fundraising Volunteers
    Grant Making Trust Fundraiser (22.5 hpw) – legacies appeal.
    Consultant Garden Gadabout Co-ordinator (variable)

Direct line management:

Close working relationships with: Consultant Garden Gadabout Co-ordinator, Sussex Beacon HR
Officer/Volunteer Co-ordinator, all other managers and heads of department, trustees, staff, volunteers and
clients of the Sussex Beacon.

External Relationships:

        External supporters, including event organisers, local business, community services, local authority,
         patrons, performers, etc.

Summary of primary functions of the Job / Role Purpose

        To effectively manage all aspects of the Sussex Beacon Fundraising department, including Sussex
         Beacon events/activities, community fundraising, donors and appeals, marketing/PR.
        To motivate and lead the staff team in order to maximise fundraising income and raise
         organisational profile.
        To take overall responsibility for the strategic and financial management of the Sussex Beacon Half
        To identify and research new fundraising opportunities.

Key Result Areas / specific duties and responsibilities:

Donors and Appeals

          Develop the Donor database and ensure effective analysis of target appeals.
          Develop methods to increase donations from existing and potential donors.
          Set a programme of direct mail appeals.
          Manage the Donor and Fundraising Administrator to co-ordinate collections and gift aid claims,
           maintain the database and produce statistical information.
          Develop a legacies campaign with assistance from Grant Making trust fundraiser.
          Develop on line giving.

Events Management

          Effectively manage the Sussex Beacon fundraising programme, including strategic planning, health
           and safety, operational and financial management.
          Manage and act as main point of contact for community led fundraising events, activities,
           committees, individuals, etc.
          Line manage Events Fundraiser and team of volunteers.
          Ensure effective marketing of Sussex Beacon and community led fundraising.
          Oversee monitoring and evaluation of all fundraising activities and events.
          Chair the Sussex Beacon Fundraising Committee.

Sussex Beacon Half Marathon

          Take overall responsibility for the strategic and financial management of the Half Marathon event
          Oversee Marketing/PR and Corporate Sponsorship strategy for the Half Marathon.
          Work closely with the Half Marathon Advisory Group.
          Line manage the Half Marathon Project Manager.
          Develop a Half Marathon business plan to enable growth and maximise income over the next 3

Marketing and PR

          Assist with the development of an overall Marketing and PR strategy for the Sussex Beacon.
          Develop a corporate sponsorship strategy, increasing local and national business links to
           maximise participation and sponsorship of events.
          Line manage the Sussex Beacon Communications Officer.
          Maintain and develop community links to raise organisational profile, e.g. media, individuals,
           organisations, etc.
          Oversee production of publicity materials and marketing of events.
          Work to actively involve the Sussex Beacon in community and awareness raising activities, e.g.
           World Aids Day/Christmas events, Brighton Pride, Brighton Festival, etc.
          Actively promote the Sussex Beacon to potential supporters and sponsors.
          Attend profile raising and fundraising events as required throughout the year.

Staff Management and Support

          Ensure the effective management of the fundraising staff and volunteer team in accordance with
           Sussex Beacon policies.
          Be responsible for recruitment and induction of new fundraising staff.
          Provide regular line management supervision and support to all fundraising staff.
          Ensure continual personal development of staff, through regular appraisal and training.
          Ensure effective communication within the fundraising team, organising regular team meetings in
           order to motivate staff and foster team spirit.
          Work in liaison with the HR Officer in dealing with potential staff issues according to legislation
           and best practice.

Financial Management

            Produce annual profit and loss budgets and projections for the fundraising department as a whole.
            Produce profit and loss budgets for all individual fundraising activities and events.
            Ensure the department keeps clear and accurate income and expenditure records of donations
             and events.
            Attend and report to the Finance Audit Committee, via profit and loss spreadsheet.
            Work to generate increased income from existing and potential sources.

Strategic Management

            Attend Management team meetings and provide departmental reports as required.
            Produce regular departmental reports to the Board of Trustees and attend board meetings as
            Liaise with the Chief Executive in developing and delivering new departmental projects via a
             business plan.
            Work to deliver the Sussex Beacon Fundraising Strategy 2009-12.
            Have input into The Sussex Beacon’s overall strategic planning process.


           Make use of managerial support and supervision, accessing appropriate training and development
           Work as a part of the Fundraising and wider Sussex Beacon Team.
           Work in accordance with The Sussex Beacon policies and procedures.
           Undertake any other duties that may within reason be required from time to time.

Personal Attributes

The Fundraising Manager needs to be a passionate, professional and self motivated individual who will be
the keystone of all Fundraising activities at the Sussex Beacon. He or she needs to be able to motivate staff
and increase the momentum already achieved by the Sussex Beacon’s Fundraising department to date.

Essential Criteria

Education and Qualifications

             Excellent standard of general education


             Wide experience of working in a fundraising environment.
             Experience of donor and target appeals.
             Experience of project managing large and high profile events.
             Experience of working within a charity or voluntary sector environment.

Key Skills and Competencies

           Excellent organisational skills.
           Proven fundraising skills with ability to achive financial targets.
           Ability to plan, balance and cope with competing priorities.
           Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
