student Daniel Cody. He claimed lack of participation has
often been linked to lack of school spirit.
“If we don’t do anything about it, no one is really connected
to the school as a sense of pride,” he added.
Appealing to the students’ personal taste is the road Drew
has taken when it comes to holding events. One recent event
was That Medieval Thing, also known at TMT. At TMT, a
reenactment group acted out historical events.
Plenty of students attended the well-known event because
of the way it was organized.
“A lot of people said they are coming because it’s an all-day
event,” said Drew student Heather Greco. “If you miss some-
thing, it’ll be repeated throughout the day.” FDU’s Florham
Fest is something like TMT except, instead of lasting all day,
the events last for a portion of each day for the duration of
      one week.
At Drew, they also offer special cash saving deals to attract
more students. The theater department offers year-round the-
ater passes. Students who love to see the plays are able to pur-
chase a pass for $15, and feel that is a big money saver since
there are four to eight productions each semester.
Drew also has a popular hang out for students, The Space,
which is comparable to FDU’s Pub. At the Pub, clubs and or-
ganizations hold events for students to attend, but that, for
the most part, are the only times it is open. However, The
Space is not only open when events are held there — students
can go to The Space to buy food and hang out with friends all
      weekend long.
“It’s a large room where we have food and events on Thurs-
days and Fridays,” said Sara Gendel. When events are held in
that area, more students attend because they go to buy food,
and end up staying for the festivities.
A good number of events held in The Space are also free,
which has heavy weight when it comes to activities.
“If we had to pay we wouldn’t go,” said Greco, who agrees
that free events attract more people.
However, the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Some events at Drew are still not as popular as FDU’s.
For example, sporting events don’t attract many students.
The basketball team, which is the most popular of the sports
activities, doesn’t have a lot students come out to their games.
Even with advertisements throughout the campus, Drew stu-
dents don’t seem to be interested.
