					                                              Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
                                                            Adult: 2.2.3


This protocol is used for patients with a history of emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis
that complain of dyspnea.

If, at any point, the patient's respiratory status deteriorates, consider intubation and
administration of Albuterol via the ET tube and nebulizer, and transport immediately.




Supportive Care
       1. Medical Supportive Care Protocol 2.1.3, including pulse oximeter and
          capnography (see Medical Procedure 4.10.1, 4.27 and Appendix 7.13).




ALS Level 1
       2. If bronchospasm is present: Albuterol (Ventolin) nebulizer treatment
          containing 0.5 ml (2.5 mg) of Albuterol mixed with 2.5 ml normal saline (see
          Medical Procedure 4.23).

       3. If bronchospasm continues, repeat Albuterol (Ventolin) nebulizer treatment
          containing 0.5 ml (2.5 mg) of Albuterol mixed with 2.5 ml normal saline (see
          Medical Procedure 4.23).

       4. If bronchospasm continues, repeat Albuterol (Ventolin) nebulizer treatment
          containing 0.5 ml (2.5 mg) of Albuterol mixed with 2.5 ml normal saline (see
          Medical Procedure 4.23).

       5. Consider need for intubation (see Medical Procedure 4.28).
