Kaiser Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery Scheduling Information
We have compiled this information to answer some of the common questions that may
come up as you and your child prepare for their up coming surgery. You may or may not
have a pre-op appointment. Certainly if you would like a preoperative appointment, we
will arrange one for you.
Surgery Scheduling:
We will fill out a surgery scheduling sheet. Our surgery scheduler will coordinate with
you the date of the surgery. We operate at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital located at the
OHSU Medical Campus.
If you have not heard from Katie, our surgery scheduler, please feel free to call her
directly at 503-203-2036.
Night before surgery:
The most important thing is to relax. It is quite normal for you or your child to be nervous
or restless.
Your child may also not have anything to eat or drink before the surgery. We do not let
anyone eat before surgery in order to prevent vomiting during the anesthesia. If one were
to vomit and inhale the vomit, one can get a serious lung problem. Please see the
guidelines below for eating before surgery. If these are not followed, surgery will be
cancelled and postponed.
Under 6 months of age:
Breast milk or formula is permitted up to 4 hours prior to start of surgery
Clear liquids (water, pedialyte, apple juice) are permitted up to 2 hours prior to
start of surgery
Over 6 months of age to adult:
No solid food/formula/milk 6 hours prior to start of surgery
Clear liquids (water, apple juice, a liquid you can see through) are permitted up to
3 hours prior to start of surgery
You may want to “map” the directions to the surgical location via the internet. Please
note the address for reference.
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital
3181 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd
Portland, OR 97201
503-418-5300
You will check in for surgery at the admitting department on the first floor near
Starbucks. Admitting phone number is 503-418-5303.
Spending the night:
Some procedures require an overnight stay. Your surgeon will discuss this with you.
Overnight procedures are preformed at Doernbecher. All the rooms are private, and a
family member is encouraged to stay in the room. Each room has a private bath and
single bed/couch. Some families bring a sleeping bag for the family member. You may
also want to bring a special blanket for your child.
Preoperative Labs:
Very few procedures require preoperative labs. If your child needs lab work before
surgery we will inform you how to get the lab work drawn. Most of the labs can be done
in the Kaiser system. Occasionally, one may need blood work done at Doernbecher.
Blood work required to be done at Doerbecher will require a special visit to the hospital.
This can be coordinated thru Doernbecher’s pre-op clinic. Cindy Sarfo is the contact
person for this clinic. Her phone number is 503-418-5303.
Arrival time for surgery:
Unfortunately, the exact length of a surgery is not totally predictable. We try to
coordinate arrival times so that you are not waiting around too long before the surgical
procedure. Katie, our assistant, will call you the week before surgery to tell you what
time to arrive.
Child-Life Specialist:
If you would like your child to tour the preoperative area, the hospital, or recovery room
before surgery, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital has a child life specialist that can
arrange a tour. You may call to set up an appointment at 503-418-5380.
If you have any other questions please let us know.
We would like to make your child’s operative experience and recovery rewarding and
positive.
Thanks,
Ron Turker, MD
Steve Renwick, MD
