    Kingdoms

     • Had grown powerful from gold/salt trade
• African tribal chiefs/leaders
When did the slave trade
        occur?
• Mid-1400s thru mid 1800s
• First 150 years slow
  – 2500 slave/year
• Middle 1000 years picked up
  – 18,000 slaves/year
• Last 150 years at its height
  – Over 50,000 slaves/year
• Increased with the need for labor in
  Western Hemisphere
    Where was the slave trade
   and where did the slaves go?
• Started on Africa’s west
  coast
• Eventually spread to
  other parts of the
  continent
• Most went to the West
  Indies/Americas
   – To make colonies
     profitable
• Some stayed in Africa
   – Slaves for other tribes
• Some went to Europe
    How were the slave caught?


• Europeans relied on
  African tribes
   – Guns for slaves
• 1/3 taken in war
• 1/3 kidnapped
• 1/3 sold by relative or
  superiors
   – During times of famine

  What was the impact of the
    African Slave Trade?
• Some parts little or no impact
• Estimated that 18,000,000 Africans were taken into
  slavery
   – Population of Africa was devastated
   – Workforce was significantly weakened
   – Country communities could not be nearly as prosperous
   – What could have been great individuals or their offspring
     were never given a chance
   – Societies and communities were destroyed
       • Took healthy and strong
   – Europe is brought to Africa
   – Africans learned a strong hatred and mistrust of Europeans
   – African customs/ideas/beliefs are spread to other parts of
     the world
   – Tension increased among African tribes as some were
