CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

We are still having problems with some clubs who seem to take out their frustrations in
the manner in which they treat, and leave, the dressing room when playing away. The
board has given notice of how this should be addressed and if the situation continues
then the full extent of the Fine tariff will be applied to enable the home team to be
compensated. This week an official of the league spoke to the chairman of a club about
the language of his manager which was totally inappropriate. The chairman refused to
take any action, even though he agreed that the language was more than unacceptable.
What else do we have to do in this league to make it a place where people can take
themselves, and their families, to enjoy an entertaining game of football without having
to listen to a load of Foul filthy language? New Milton Town please take note.

LEAGUE NEWS

FIXTURES SECRETARY – The League has accepted with much regret the
resignation of Malcolm Watts, through ill health, from his role of fixtures secretary.
Malcolm has filled the role since 1998 and the League is extremely grateful for the
dedication he has shown and effort he has given over that time.

We are sure all Clubs will echo those views and sincerely wish Malcolm a return to
full health as soon as possible.

Ian Craig will now continue in the role of fixtures secretary for the remainder of the
 season.

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
CHAIRS AND SECRETARIES MEETING – There is a Chairs and Secretaries Meeting on
Sunday 22nd January 2012. This will take place at Totton & Eling Sports Club, Southern
Gardens. The meeting will be at 10:00 for a 10:30 start.

CONTACT DETAILS – Communications Consultant for the Sydenhams Football League
(Wessex), Matt Richbell, will be operating from a new mobile telephone number. This is
with immediate effect and the number is 07861417120.

HOSPITALITY – All Clubs put in a lot of work and expense to provide after match
hospitality and it is churlish at best for Clubs to leave after a game without partaking of
some. If for any reason such as travel etc. you find it impracticable to stay after a game
please advise the home club in advance.

PASSES – Again following recent “incidents” can we clarify the following,

ALL CLUBS have been provided with eight Passes for officials to use when attending
away fixtures. Should you choose not to use them then the home club is entitled to seek
payment if it wishes.

ASSESSORS have league passes enabling them to gain admittance to matches in which
they are assessing. These passes do NOT automatically apply to games in which they are
not assessing neither do the aforementioned League Passes automatically entitle users
to games not involving their Clubs.

PRESS The acceptance of Press Passes is down to each Club and we are aware of
instances of such Passes being shown when the user is not actually reporting on the
match.

PROGRAMMES The correct use of any Pass does not automatically entitle the user to a
free Matchday Programme.

In respect of all of the above it is up to each Club to act as it sees fit

PLAYERS – The League is aware of some instances where clubs have journeyed to away
matches with 20 or more players, all of whom have warmed up and taken advantage of
the home club’s facilities and hospitality. This is unnecessary and unfair to the home club
and we would suggest that it should rarely be necessary for more than 17 players to be
involved.

WHITE BOARDS – All clubs will be receiving in the near future via their club reps White
Boards which MUST be used on matchdays to advise as to the team line-ups. This will
benefit spectators and avoid club secretaries being “badgered” for the line-ups by the
ultra-keen supporters. One word of advice – do NOT use Permanent Markers on same!

STEP 5/6 CHANGES

The Sydenhams Football League (Wessex) were represented at a meeting the FA on
Sunday regarding the future of Football at Step Five (Premier Division). The content
below was debated at the monthly board meeting tonight and it was agreed to be a
positive step forward into the development of an effective Pyramid Structure at this
level.
The Football Association is now in a position to update Leagues and Clubs on the current
position with regard to a review of the Step 5 / 6 structure of the National League
System.
There was always the intention, as part of the overall restructure, to align the number of
promotion places to Step 4 with the number of relegation places available. With Step 4

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
now established with 6 Divisions and 12 possible relegation places, the Leagues
Committee established a Review Group charged with the task of exploring the possibility
of reducing the current 14 Step 5 Divisions down to 12.
A consultation process commenced in September with the Review Group meeting
individually with each of the Step 5 / 6 competitions. Following these meetings it was
established that there was a majority of leagues in favour of such a reorganisation taking
place at Step 5. At a meeting with all Step 5 leagues held yesterday (8 January) at
Burton Albion FC the Review Group presented their current thinking. An example of how
a new structure might look was presented. It was emphasised that the example shown
included all current Step 5 clubs and did not take into account if the club fully complied
with the appropriate grading criteria. There will also be two season’s normal club
movements by way of promotion and relegation to take into account. The meeting also
highlighted the following:

 That every effort should be made to establish 12 Step 5 divisions each of 22
        clubs.
 To be included, Clubs must achieve Ground Grading Category F, as independently
        verified, by 31 March 2013.
 So as to not disadvantage any club, all clubs that meet the F Grade will be
included in the new structure and to facilitate this, in the first season, 2013/2014,
the number of clubs in each division may vary between 22 and 25.
 By adjustments being made to the number of relegated clubs from Step 5 over
the following one or two seasons, numbers would reduce to 22 clubs.

The next stage of the consultation process sees all Step 5 clubs invited to attend a series
of regional meetings to consider the current situation and have any concerns explained
to them. These meetings are to take place as follows:

Sunday 15 January at the Thurrock Hotel, Aveley
Sunday 22 January at The West Riding County FA offices in Leeds
Sunday 29 January at the Leicester Marriott Hotel
Sunday 12 February at Yeovil Town FC

Based upon the feedback from both the leagues and clubs meetings the Leagues
Committee will determine the way forward. The Review Group will also be looking at
Step 6 in more detail in the coming months.
Commenting on the project Mike Appleby, Leagues and Clubs Manager, emphasised that
this was very much work in progress and that no final decision had been made: “There
are a number of inaccurate rumours circulating at the present time and we must await
the outcome of the consultation process before any final recommendation is made.
“Part of the original aims of the restructure process was to try to equalise the travelling
of clubs. It is inevitable therefore that some clubs will find an increase in their travel
whilst some will see a reduction”

“The leagues themselves have asked that Step 5 and 6 be reviewed and we are following
this through but I reiterate that no decision has been made and will not be made until
the consultation process has been completed”.
Should any restructure take place it will take effect from season 2013/2014.
Recognising that this is a 'work in progress', the league will be working with the FA to
ensure our current and future clubs at this level benefit from the hard work and
investments that they have made.
The League will be holding a meeting with Chairs and Secretaries to discuss the details
of this on January 22nd.

Vernham Labels FC and a celebration of his life will take place at New Streets’ clubhouse
on January 26th.

Manager receiving the club of the month award from League Chairman, Bob Purkiss:

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
BRADING TOWN – The Isle-of-Wight Premier Division side have linked up with
McDonald’s. The Ryde branch of the fast food restaurant has agreed to have the Romans
as their partner club. Town’s reserve side will soon be wearing a new strip bearing the
McDonald’s logo and equipment will be provided for both the senior and colts sections at
Vicarage Lane. Brading’s reserve team manager, Steve Lawton, has said; “This is a great
offer from a global company who are committed to helping football, not only at
international level but also at grass roots. We are honoured that McDonald’s have chosen
our club.”

CHRISTCHURCH – Veteran Goalkeeper, Stewart Kearn, has signed for neighbours in
the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division, Bashley, on dual-registration terms. Bashley
have been without a regular first choice keeper since David Elm retired due to injury in
October. Several keepers have stepped in and filled the void in the meantime, but Kearn
has now joined from Hurn Bridge with a view to becoming first choice for the Foresters.

FAREHAM TOWN – The Creeksiders are pleased to confirm the signings of Kieron
Lewis, Lewis Smith and Dave Birmingham.
Kieron, a central defender, was signed from Hampshire League side, University of
Portsmouth, after moving down here to study. He has previously played in the Southern
League Premier Division for Oxford City.
Lewis Smith, a full back, has joined the club after being released from Cambridge United
where he had spent the previous two seasons playing for their academy side in the
Eastern Counties League Premier Division (East Anglian equivalent of the Sydenhams
Football League (Wessex)) and was scouted by Town as far back as last August and
Town took no time in capturing his signature. Dave ‘Birmy’ Birmingham has returned to
Cams Alders from fellow Premier Division side, Moneyfields.

Manager Matt Parr was pleased to capture the signatures of the trio, “In Kieron and
Lewis, I genuinely believe we have two exciting youngsters who Town supporters will
enjoy watching on a regular basis, whilst Dave Birmingham has been there, done that
and got the T-shirt and gives us some much needed experience.”

HAMWORTHY UNITED – The Hammers have organised an additional fixture at the
County Ground on Tuesday 17th January 2012, they play host to a Wimborne Town XI,
with the game kicking off at 19:45.

HAYLING UNITED – Following Lee Paul’s departure as manager of the Humbugs, Steve
Poulton has taken over as manager at the College. Poulton got his Humbugs reign off to
a winning start with a 2-1 defeat of Hamworthy United thanks to goals from Ashley
Fisher and Lee Tigwell.

HYTHE AND DIBDEN - Hythe & Dibden Football Club regret to inform that Tony Moyst
passed away on the 14th January 2012. He held the role of secretary for 50 years, but
even after his retirement he was still an active member of the club who enjoyed
socialising with everyone involved in football. He will be sadly missed by all.

LYMINGTON TOWN – Luke Baker has left Romsey Town and has signed for divisional
rivals, Lymington Town. Baker has only made eight appearances for the Bypass Ground
club so far this season. Romsey Assistant Manager, Stuart Long, has spoken of the
move; “Luke’s been on the fringes at Romsey, he trains hard and it’s not fair to keep
bringing him along if he’s not getting games. He didn’t really want to go, but he’s been
with Andy Leader before as a youngster and, with a view that we’re trying to sign some
other players as well, we thought it was the fairest thing.”

TOTTON & ELING – Totton & Eling would welcome applications for the chairmanship of
the Club. Please apply to Club Secretary, Michael Clarke,
michael@clarke96.orangehome.co.uk or on 07825 576359.

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
WHAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK?

WINCHESTER CITY hit the summit of the Premier Division on Tuesday night thanks to a
Leigh Mills penalty five minutes from time. HORNDEAN had defended resolutely
throughout but their resistance was finally broken when Leigh Mills was hauled down by
Aaron Fennemore and Mills himself stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way.
Earlier in the second half, City had an excellent opportunity to go ahead, but Jamie
White’s penalty went comfortably over the crossbar. Mills had an opportunity before that
for City and Aaron Fennemore came close for Horndean. Mark Lilley came off the bench
for City and also came close, but Mills’ late winner was enough to ensure City went top
of the table with three games in hand. Elsewhere in the Premier Division on Tuesday,
FAREHAM TOWN got their second clean sheet in a row with a 1-0 home win against
FAWLEY AFC at Cams Alders. Steve Cammack got the only goal of the game with his first
for the Creeksiders in the 80th minute to win an even game that had few chances.
City’s title rivals, BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS, had a tricky league cup
quarter-final cup tie at BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES, the difficulty of which was reflected in
the full-time result, BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES 4-0 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS.
Poppies front man Martin Warren was the star of the show with a hat-trick for the hosts
and there was also a debut goal for Adam Taylor.
There was also a league cup third round tie on Tuesday night at The Bypass
Ground which finished ROMSEY TOWN 1-0 NEW MILTON TOWN; however, the score line
does not reflect the game. New Milton Town produced an excellent display away from
home and created numerous chances but were unable to convert any of these. The
visitors started brightly with make-shift full-back Tom Donaldson coming close from fully
25-yards. Donaldson, a former Romsey Town, Winchester City, Alresford Town and
Blackfield and Langley winger/forward is currently occupying the full-back berth due to
the Linnets’ new dual-registration signings, Alex Moth, Harrison Gilkes and Ryan Case,
from AFC Bournemouth playing higher up the pitch. Donaldson’s early effort
spearheaded New Milton’s impressive start and Paul Preston was the next to come close
for the visitors when he cut inside his man and dragged his effort wide of the near post.
Romsey then forayed forward and won a free kick. Simon De’Ath took aim from the set
piece, but his effort was straight at David Rowe in the Linnets’ goal. Several minutes
later and it was New Milton back in the ascendency when Alex Moth twice came close.
Midway through the first half and the deadlock was broken. Gareth Batchelor attacked
New Milton from the left and his delivery was converted by Romsey Town's new dual-
registration signing, Liam Robinson. Robinson has signed from Blue Square Bet South
side, Eastleigh, to cover for Ben White whilst he goes abroad and White was a spectator
amongst the crowd at the Bypass and looked on as his replacement opened the scoring.
Moments later and Romsey had a glorious opportunity to double their lead, but Simon
De'Ath was denied by a smart stop from Rowe. On the half-hour, Alex Baldacchino, a
thorn in Romsey's side throughout, robbed the defence and fired over the bar from the
corner of the box. Alex Moth had another effort late in the first-half but the Romsey
keeper saved well. Late in the first half there was a moment of controversy when Ross
Gregory's arm appeared to catch Alex Baldacchino in the face, and the Town skipper was
yellow-carded for the offence. New Milton started the second half well and Alex Moth had
a free kick saved. Paul Preston crossed just before the hour and found Alex Moth
unmarked, but the AFC Bournemouth youngster headed inches over for the visitors. Alex
Baldacchino again came close with 20 minutes remaining when his effort went just past
the far post. With thirteen minutes remaining, the Romsey Town keeper made a point
blank save and with five minutes later, Darren Curtis' goalbound flick was headed
straight at the Romsey keeper by Baldacchino. Romsey's man-of-the-match goalkeeper
made one final save at the end when Alex Moth had an effort from distance saved and
Romsey Town blew a huge sigh of relief on the referee’s final whistle and celebrated a
win which sees them book a quarter-final tie with Christchurch at Hurn Bridge.
GE HAMBLE were in Russell Cotes Cup action on Tuesday night at home to University of
Portsmouth. The Planemakers were made to work hard for their 2-0 triumph thanks to
goals from Doug Rowe and a 20-yard volley from Lewis Fennemore whilst Jon Webb was

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
a spectator in Hamble's goal. Manager Danny Bowers admitted that the visitors worked
hard, but ultimately it is the home side that are through to the next round.

ANDOVER NEW STREET won 2-1 away at WARMINSTER TOWN in Division One on
Wednesday night.
Elsewhere, in the league cup 3rd round, NEWPORT IOW and EAST COWES VICS finally
played their tie after several postponements; the hosts won 1-0.
In the league cup quarter-finals, BROCKENHURST were beaten 3-2 at home by
MONEYFIELDS. Steve Hutchins bagged a hat-trick for the visitors whilst Warren Kenna
scored a penalty in response for the hosts and Carlo Tate added a late consolation goal.

On Friday night, at Test Park, TEAM SOLENT beat PETERSFIELD TOWN on a bitterly cold
night. The home side took the lead midway through the first-half and they doubled their
lead shortly afterwards. Petersfield pulled a goal back late in the first-half from close
range but the Students extended their lead in the second half and held out for a 3-1
home victory.

WHAT HAPPENED ON SATURDAY?
NEW MILTON TOWN travelled to BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES with a depleted side but
produced an impressive display to win 2-0 at Victoria Park. Without Alex Baldacchino,
Paul Preston and Tom Donaldson, Manager Glenn Burnett would have undoubtedly
settled for a point, but his side produced what Burnett described as "the best win since I
joined the club" to win 2-0. Ryan Case put the Linnets ahead on 56 minutes and Callum
Tanner added the decisive second goal in stoppage time. That win maintained New
Milton's unbeaten start to 2012 and ended Poppies' recent of scoring 15 in their last five
home games and they hadn’t conceded during that time either.
Elsewhere on Saturday, WINCHESTER CITY increased their lead at the top of the Premier
Division table with a 2-0 away win at DOWNTON. Jamie White scored both goals in the
second half for City including one from the penalty spot.
First half goals from Steve Brown and Nick Sharp were enough to give ALTON TOWN and
their new management team a 2-0 Home win against LYMINGTON TOWN. This win was
the Brewers' new management teams' first win since taking charge.
BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY drew 0-0 at home to ALRESFORD TOWN. Wayne Mew's ROMSEY
TOWN side won 3-0 away at BRADING TOWN. Chris Hall, Lee Burch and new signing
Liam Robinson got Town's goals. FAREHAM TOWN drew 0-0 at home to HORNDEAN with
Dan Hayes hitting the post with ten minutes left for the visitors. MONEYFIELDS won 2-0
away at FAWLEY AFC whilst Danny Bowers' GE HAMBLE won 3-1 at home against
HAYLING UNITED. Simon Browne was a very happy and relieved manager after
HAMWORTHY UNITED won 2-0 at home to CHRISTCHURCH thanks to two Luke Burbidge
goals. LAVERSTOCK & FORD's home game with NEWPORT (IOW) was postponed due to
a frozen pitch.

In Division One on Saturday, BROCKENHURST drew 1-1 at home to PEWSEY VALE.
STOCKBRIDGE drew 0-0 at home to UNITED SERVICES PORTSMOUTH. FLEET SPURS
won 5-2 at home to HYTHE AND DIBDEN. The visitors scored an own goal after just
seven minutes and Spurs doubled their lead shortly afterwards through James Wills,
after his original effort hit the post. Spurs had hit the woodwork just before their second
goal, when Chris Musgrove came close. Sean Stone reduced the arrears after half an
hour, and the score remained 2-1 going in at half-time. Musgrove made it 3-1 with 15
minutes remaining with a header from a James Wills corner. Two minutes later and it
was 4-1 when Adam Aimable turned and shot in the box with his effort rifling past Moss
in the visitors' goal. Substitute Neil Selby supplied Alex Pickering who scored with a
volley to make it 5-1 near the end and although Stone grabbed his second in stoppage
time, it was little consolation for the Watersiders. VERWOOD TOWN produced a rampant
display, winning 6-0 away at EAST COWES VICS. Haskell put Town ahead after just five
minutes and Homer made it two on 13 minutes. It was 3-0 on 27 minutes through Webb

Issue Number 126 – 15/01/12
and he added a second from the penalty spot just before the hour. Dyer made it five on
70 minutes and it was six late on thanks to Haskell.

In the Wiltshire Senior Cup Quarter-Finals, BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS beat
Corsham Town 6-1. Jack Slade scored twice whilst Joe Sanger, Young, Gallagher and
Roberts with a penalty made it six. Elsewhere, WARMINSTER TOWN surrendered a three
goal lead to draw 3-3 in normal time and subsequently lose 4-3 after extra time against
Highworth Town, away from home.

opportunity to apply pressure on league leaders, Winchester City, when they host
