How To Fast: The Practice Of Fasting
INTRODUCTION
Now that we have viewed the teachings
regarding the importance of fasting, it is
important for us to understand how to fast

Fasting is not to be practiced, just because it
sounds like something one wants to try,
but should be taken seriously and used for
some important times in life…these we will
    discuss in our lesson…
INTRODUCTION
It is also helpful that we are not hypocritical
and that we fully understand the kinds of
       fasts mentioned in the Bible

As with any spiritual activity we approach the
source of authority…the Bible… for answers
DIFFERENT KINDS OF FASTS
   THE NORMAL FAST
-This fast consisted of water without any
          food substance (Matt. 4:2)
-This fast would last as long as the
          individual deemed necessary based
          on the issue at hand
-The normal time period was 1-3 days
DIFFERENT KINDS OF FASTS
   THE PARTIAL FAST
-This fast allowed vegetables and other
          light foods (Daniel 1:15; 10:3)
-This fast would exclude the delicacies of
          one’s normal eating pattern
-This fast usually lasted from 1 – 3
          days also
DIFFERENT KINDS OF FASTS
   THE ABSOLUTE FAST
-In this type of fast there would be no food
or fluids taken (I Kings 19:7-10)
-These fasts would last only a short period
of time, unless there was Divine
         assistance (Exod. 34:28)
-Again, most of the time, these fasts would
not exceed 3 days (Acts 9:9)
OCCASIONS FOR FASTING
  Mourning A Death
-David fasted as Saul and Jonathan were
         killed (I Samuel 31:13; II Sam 1:12)
-Fasting during these times expressed the
grief over the loss of a loved one
-In going to God in humble prayer, comfort
could be sought in this difficult time
OCCASIONS FOR FASTING
  Seeking Forgiveness
    -Fasting demonstrates our humility before
          God
-When someone was in sin they would fast
        and repent (I Samuel 7:6)
-When we humble ourselves before God for
our sins, we may deter His wrath
        (I Kings 21:25-29; Jonah 3:5-9)
OCCASIONS FOR FASTING
  For Protection From Harm
-When we feel that danger may come our
way we can seek the Lord’s mighty
        hand (Ezra 8:21, 23, 31)
-God can defeat any rival that comes our
         way
-Perhaps the devil may be your adversary
when you decide to fast (Matt. 6:13)
OCCASIONS FOR FASTING
  Times Of Sickness
-We may find that in our prayers for the
sick we should spend time fasting
         (II Samuel 12:15-20)
-David also fasted as recorded in the
Psalms for the sick (Psalm 35:13-14)
-We must seek God who can restore health
         to His created beings
OCCASIONS FOR FASTING
  For Spiritual Direction
-The early church fasted when selecting
and appointing elders in the church
          (Acts 14:23)
-In selecting Paul and Barnabas, the
brethren fasted and asked for the
           Lord to help
HOW TO FAST
Decide On A Time For Fasting
-Depending on the issue before you, you
can fast for any period of time
         needed
-Make sure that the time you select will be
a time for drawing closer to the Lord
-Fasting is a time for you and God to get
          together …use it wisely
HOW TO FAST
Decide The Kind Of Fast You Will Need
-Those with health problems may need to
participate in only a partial fast
-If you are really seeking to deny yourself in
humility, you may choose to abstain
            from all food
-You will have to determine your fast on the
          basis of your needs
HOW TO FAST
  Spend Time In Prayer
-Fasting is not Biblical fasting without being
          accompanied by prayer
-If we are not seeking God’s favor during
fasting, then we are seeking our own
-This is a good time to express our
          sinfulness and seek forgiveness and
          blessings from the Lord
HOW TO FAST
  Serve And Worship God
    -Spend time reading your Bible…meditating
         on spiritual things
-Serve God in obedience while being
         a blessing to others
-Remember not to be hypocritical but
direct your fast toward God who will
        reward you
APPLICATION
Fasting is not a very hard practice to
understand, but can be difficult to practice
When you have a need to fast, be sure to
start slow and humble yourself before God
Remember that fasting is for a spiritual
    purpose in afflicting the soul
Don’t exclude fasting from your spiritual life
as a custom, but rather accept it as the
    Lord’s instructions for His disciples
