PRACTISE ASSESSMENT TASK - THE CRUCIBLE
In a minimum of 500 words, respond to one of the following topics, exploring the key ideas, characters or
themes of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. Remember to plan your answer carefully before you begin writing:

     1. Abigail is presented as ‘vengeful’, Elizabeth as ‘cold’ and there is little good to be said for
the other female characters in ‘The Crucible’. Is this a fair assessment of these characters, or
are the women simply products of their time and society?

     2. A crucible is a vessel used to heat and purify its contents. How is this metaphor symbolic of
the character’s journeys in ‘The Crucible’? Refer specifically to Rev. Hale, John Proctor and
        Elizabeth Proctor.

     3. Discuss how the dramatic aspects of the play, ‘The Crucible’ are used by Miller to draw
attention to the play’s key theme of conflict. (Dramatic aspects include Miller’s writing style
and language choices, his stage directions and the structure of the play.)
