									Dear Dr. Dave
  by Julie Thomas
Dear Dr. Dave,
I found some geese. There are lots of them
flying on the lake across the street from my
house. They like me too! Your friend,
Kyle
Dear Kyle,
Our lakes in West Texas
are really playa wetlands
– sometimes wet and
sometimes dry. Canada
geese are here to rest on the
water for the winter season.
They will fly north again in
the spring.
Your friend,
Dr. Dave
Dear Dr. Dave,
My cousin and I are feeding my
geese some corn. They are sure
hungry. Maybe I can get my
geese to stay at my lake.
Your friend,
Kyle
Dear Kyle,
Actually, these geese are just
roosting on the playa water.
They feed on milo, corn, and
winter wheat that they find in
nearby farm fields.
Sometimes geese eat plants
that begin to grow around
playas just before they
migrate to their summer
nesting grounds in the north.
Your friend,
Dr. Dave
Dear Dr. Dave,
There are no plants on my playa
– and I think the workers are
scaring my geese away. I’m
going to get my geese to charge
after them.
Your friend,
Kyle
Dear Kyle,
Playas manage flood
waters in heavy rains.
Lubbock has grown and
more streets and houses
have increased the
rainwater flow into
playas. City workers are
trying to solve this water
problem.
Your friend,
Dr. Dave
Dear Dr. Dave,
I miss seeing my geese during the
day and hearing them at night.
Today I found a pipe that will
hold lots of water. I am still
looking for the plants.
Your friend,
Kyle
Dear Kyle,
Look in the sky.
Your geese are
probably getting
ready to fly north to
begin their nesting
season. They have
to be in good shape
to fly to Canada for
the summer.
Your friend,
Dr. Dave
Dear Dr. Dave,
I don’t want my house to flood
but I miss my geese.
Your friend,
Kyle
Dear Kyle,
Most Canada Geese are here only
for the winter season. Hopefully,
these geese will return to Lubbock
next fall.
Your friend,
Dr. Dave
Dear Dr. Dave,
I’ll be waiting for my
geese in the fall. Maybe
I can make a new lake
in my backyard for next
year.
Your friend,
Kyle
