                                 Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Xavier Rogiers is born on November 1, 1956 in Ieper, Belgium as a son of a
Cardiologist. He passed primary and secondary school at the St. Vincentius-College in Ieper
and performed his military service as Batallions Surgeon in the First Belgian Paratrooper
Batallion (SAS). His medical studies were obtained at the Catholic University of Leuven
(Belgium) and finished with the degree of doctor in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics, which
was obtained „magna cum laude“ in 1982. He performed his General Surgery training also at
the Catholic University of Leuven from 1982 to 1989. Subsequently Dr. Rogiers did a
fellowship in Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery at the University of Chicago. After 2
years as a staff member at the University of Leuven, Department of Abdominal Surgery he
moved to the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf to take the function of assistant
professor (Oberarzt). There he passed habilitation (similar to PhD) in 1997 on the subject of
„Optimization of liver splitting technique for transplantation in two donors: The in-situ split
liver transplantation“

In 1998 he was appointed Director of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery and
Transplantation at the University Hospital Eppendorf, Hamburg. This department is one of the
3 largest liver transplant centers in Germany and one of the largest pediatric transplant centers
in the Europe. In 2001 he was nominated President of the „European Liver Tranplant
Association“. In the same year he also received a doctorate of honoris causa at the University
of Goeteborg, Sweden

Dr. Rogiers is member of many national and international societies. He is the inventor of the
in-situ split liver procedure

The main research interests of Dr. Rogiers and his department are tissue engineering of liver
and pancreas, liver regeneration, ischemia and reperfusion injury and thrombocyte function in
transplantation. Research is performed in cooperation with several renowned institutes inside
the University and other Universities in Germany

Dr. Rogiers is author or co-author in 15 books and over 100 original peer reviewed
