a dynamic, collaborative GIS Specialist to conduct spatial analysis and cartography. This
position works out of our office in Bozeman, Montana.
The GIS Specialist works as part of the Research Team, which is a multi-disciplinary team established to
collaboratively apply research and analytical expertise within the Sonoran Institute.
The GIS Specialist is responsible for conducting spatial analysis using GIS and other appropriate software,
participating in the full range of GIS project development activities – project scoping, database design and
development, data acquisition and processing, analysis, visualization, documentation, and reports. The position
is also responsible for applying cartographic principles to prepare maps, developing map templates, establishing
cartographic norms, and plotting of maps and other graphics as well as other tasks.
Proficient with ArcGIS software suite
Proficient at spatial analysis
Experience working with and manipulating raster and vector datasets
Experience with geodatabases
Basic cartography and graphic design skills
Experience with inferential/parametric statistics
Basic database design and development skills to organize and manage large tabular and spatial databases
Excellent written and verbal communications skills
Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to operate computer hardware, printers, and large-scale plotters
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
Ability to work and communicate collaboratively in a team environment within a West-wide nonprofit
organization that promotes community-based conservation.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Bachelor’s degree in geography, planning or natural resources and at least 3 years of GIS/research experience; or Master’s
degree in geography, planning or natural resources and 1-3 years of GIS/research experience; or any combination of
education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. GIS certificate preferred.
Prefer experience with CommunityViz; advanced cartography skills utilizing Adobe and other graphical design software;
experience with non-parametric and spatial statistics; advanced database design and development experience (SQL,
Access); and experience with various programming languages (R, S, Python, ArcObjects, C++, VB, Net). A valid
driver’s license is required for some local and regional travel.
This is a full-time position located in Bozeman, Montana. Salary range of $35,000 – 43,500 is
dependent on experience plus a competitive benefits package. Part-time may be considered. If you are
