HS Sports Controversy: Running Up the Score

Next Big Thing

Week in Rap

[STUDENTS]

Hi, We're the Tarhill Team at Northwest Middle School in Winston-Salem North
Carolina

We think orange looks great on you. Have fun wearing our shirts. Channel One News
starts right now! Woooooo!

[SHELBY]

THANKS GUYS FOR HELPING US GET STARTED, WE THINK YOUR ORANGE
SHIRTS ARE LOOKIN' GOOD!

ALRIGHT LET'S CHECK ON YOUR HEADLINES FOR THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY
28TH. AD, WHAT ARE YOU COVERING?

[ADRIANA]

A NEW REPORT OUT SAYS THAT THE FINANCIAL MELTDOWN THAT LEAD
TO THE RECESSION COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.

THAT'S WHAT A GOVERNMENT APPOINTED PANEL HAS CONCLUDED
AFTER AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSE OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS.

THE REPORT SAID GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND WALLSTREET
EXECUTIVES IGNORED WARNINGS SIGNS AND FAILED TO MANAGE
RISKS.AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES DIDN'T WATCHOVER BANKS LIKE
THEY SHOULD.

“Theirs was a big miss, not a stumble.”

IT ALSO SAID THE BUSH AND CLINTON ADMINISTRATIONS, THE CURRENT
AND PREVIOUS FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIRMEN, AND THE FORMER NEW
YORK FEDERAL RESERVE PRESIDENT ALL SHARE SOME RESPONSIBILITY.

"None of what happened was an act of God. The greatest tragedy would be to accept the
idea that no one could have seen this crisis coming and thus nothing could have been
done. If we accept this notion, it will happen again."

BUT NOT EVERYONE ON THE 10-MEMBER PANEL AGREES. FOUR
REPUBLICAN MEMBERS DIDN'T SIGN OFF ON THE REPORT - BECAUSE THEY
THINK THAT IT BLAMED THE CRISIS ON TOO MANY FACTORS.

[ALI]

AND TODAY MARKS A TRAGIC ANNIVERSARY - OF THE WORST DISASTER
IN THE HISTORY OF THE U-S SPACE PROGRAM

IT WAS 25 YEARS AGO - JANUARY 28, 1986, WHEN JUST 73 SECONDS AFTER
TAKEOFF, THE SPACE SHUTTLE CHALLENGER BURST INTO FLAMES

IT'S CONSIDERED THE FIRST MAJOR DISASTER TO UNFOLD ON LIVE
TELEVISION.

ALL SEVEN CREWMEMBERS ON BOARD WERE KILLED - INCLUDING A
SCHOOL TEACHER FROM NEW HAMPSHIRE.

CHRISTA MCAULIFFE WAS NOT AN ASTRONAUT - BUT THE FIRST TEACHER
TO PARTICIPATE IN A PROGRAM CALLED TEACHERS IN SPACE.

IN HONOR OF THE CHALLENGER DISASTER, THE FAMILIES OF THE CREW
STARTED THE CHALLENGER CENTER FOR SPACE SCIENCE AND
EDUCATION.

EVERY YEAR, AROUND 400-THOUSAND STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT SPACE
AND TAKE SIMULATED SPACE MISSIONS AT LEARNING CENTERS AROUND
THE COUNTRY.

TODAY, THE 48TH CHALLENGER LEARNING CENTER OPENS IN LOUISVILLE,
KENTUCKY

[SHELBY]
PRESIDENT OBAMA HELD A LIVE Q-AND-A SESSION ON YOU TUBE
YESTERDAY - HOPING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUNG PEOPLE

"welcome back to youtube Mister President." / "it's great to be here Steve, thanks for
doing this."

HIS PITCH ON THE WEB IS PART OF A WEEK-LONG EFFORT TO SELL THE
PLAN HE LAID OUT IN THE STATE OF THE UNION.

"We've gotta make sure we're focused exclusively on economic growth over the next 12
months."

THE WHITE HOUSE HIT SOCIAL MEDIA HARD YESTERDAY. ON TWITTER
AND FACEBOOK, TOP AIDES PUSHED THE PRESIDENT'S PROPOSAL FOR
TARGETED SPENDING IN EDUCATION AND INNOVATION AS THE ROAD TO
A NEW ECONOMY.

"Think it's just another way of bringing people a little closer to the decisions that are
made here and why."

IT'S NOT SOMETHING NEW - IT'S A PAGE RIGHT OUT THE PRESIDENT'S '08
CAMPAIGN PLAYBOOK. AND MANY SAY IT WAS THE YOUTH VOTE THAT
HELPED HIM WIN. AND HE'S BACK TRYING TO GET THEM ON BOARD - ON
LINE - WHERE THEY HANG OUT.

BUT LAWMAKERS AGAINST THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN WERE OUT AT TOWN
HALLS MAKING THEIR OWN CASE

"I think he truly believes that government is the answer to all of our economic
problems."

THAT'LL DO IT FOR HEADLINES. UP NEXT- A HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM
IS GETTING SOME HEAT. WE'LL TELL YOU WHY.

[SHELBY]

WHETHER YOU'RE A STAR ATHLETE OR A NUMBER ONE FAN, THERE'S
NOTHING LIKE SEEING YOUR TEAM WIN A GAME.

BUT IS IT POSSIBLE TO BEAT A TEAM BY TOO MANY POINTS? JUSTIN FINCH
HAS THE STORY.

[JUSTIN]

IT'S BEEN A GOOD SEASON FOR THE CHRISTIAN HERITAGE SCHOOL'S
LADY CRUSADERS BASKETBALL TEAM.
I was a little surprised.

BECAUSE, A RECENT GAME AGAINST WEST RIDGE ACADEMY TURNED UP
A FINAL SCORE THAT WAS MUCH HIGHER THAN ANYONE EXPECTED -- 1-08
TO 3.

TEAM CAPTAINS BRITTANY HURLBUT AND EMILY VOOLK SAY NOW
THEY'RE GETTING A BAD WRAP FOR HAVING POOR SPORTSMANSHIP.

We all feel bad.

If we hurt anyone's feelings, whether it be the players or the coaches or anybody at the
school, that we just offer our sincere apology.

The scoreboards are broken, so the scoreboard isn't right in front of you as you dribble
down the court.

BROKEN SCOREBOARDS OR NOT, LOP-SIDED SCORES LIKE THIS HAPPEN
QUITE A BIT.

WHEN A GAME LOOKS LIKE IT’S HEADED IN THAT DIRECTION - MANY SAY
COACHES SHOULD PUT IN THEIR SECOND-STRING PLAYERS. IT COULD
KEEP THE SCORE FROM GETTING TOO WIDE - AND ALSO GIVE OTHERS A
CHANCE TO PLAY

EVEN THE PRINCIPAL OF CHRISTIAN HERITAGE AGREES SOMETHING
SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE.

It just kind of got away from us, so I wanna apologize for that, first of all, because we
didn't mean to run the score like that.

BUT CRUSADERS' COACH ROB McGILL SAYS IT'S NOT AN EASY CALL --
BECAUSE GOING EASY ON A LOSING TEAM CAN ALSO BE EMBARRASSING.

I struggle with it and that's why I'd rather a team play me straight up, that's why I played
them straight up. because I didn't want to taunt them, I didn't want to embarrass them, I
didn't want them to think, hey, we can do whatever we want.

MCGILL SAYS HIS TEAM KNOWS WHAT ITS LIKE TO BE ON THE OTHER
SIDE TOO AND HAVE HAD THEIR FAIR SHARE OF LOSING SEASONS.

BOTH HE AND THE PLAYERS SAY THERE WERE NO HARD FEELINGS ON
EITHER SIDE OF THE COURT AFTER THE GAME.

There was no snide remarks or anything like that.
MCGILL SAYS HE REGRETS THE WAY THE GAME ENDED, BUT HE SAYS HIS
TEAM SHOULDN'T BE CALLED POOR SPORTS JUST FOR HAVING A STRONG
TEAM.

We want our students to be the best academic students, as well as the best athletic
students out there, and if that's what I'm being blamed for, then okay. I accept it.

I SPOKE WITH THE ATHELTIC DIRECTOR FROM WEST RIDGE HE SAYS THE
TEAM HAS MOVED ON SINCE THE LOSS. BUT HE DID SAY THAT IF HIS
TEAM WAS IN THAT POSITION, HE WOULD PUT IN HIS SECOND STRING
PLAYERS.

WEST RIDGE IS NOT A REGULAR PUBLIC SCHOOL - ITS A SCHOOL THAT
HELPS TEENS DEAL WITH THINGS LIKE SUBSTANCE ABUSE. HE SAYS
THEY'RE JUST THERE TO PLAY, AND ARE NOW FOCUSING ON THEIR NEXT
GAME AGAINST CHRISTIAN HERTIAGE IN FEBRUARY.

[SHELBY]

THANKS JUSTIN. ALRIGHT GUYS I GOTTA ASK- WHAT KIND OF A
COMPETITOR ARE *YOU*? PUT YOUR SPORTSMANSHIP TO THE TEST WITH
OUR QUIZ OVER ON THE SPORTS PAGE AT CHANNELONE.COM.

COMING UP - I THINK I KNOW WHAT THE NEXT BIG THING IS - BUT IT'S UP
TO YOU TO MAKE THE FINAL DECISION!

[SHELBY]

OK, IT'S NEXT BIG THING TIME. LAST WEEK, WE TOLD YOU ABOUT A SELF-
HEATING JACKET THAT'S MADE TO WARM YOU UP. THE RESULTS ARE IN

86% PERCENT OF YOU SAID YES - THE HEAT IS ON!

BUT 14% PERCENT OF YOU SAID NO - THIS JACKET SHOULD BE LEFT IN THE
COLD!

NOW THIS WEEK'S NEXT BIG THING. THE IDEA WAS SENT TO US BY TINA
MOORE FROM CLINTON, NORTH CAROLINA.

OK WAIT A SECOND. I NEED TO GET IN THE ZONE.

MUCH BETTER! OK, SO COULD I POSSIBLY BE WEARING THE NEXT BIG
THING?
IT MIGHT LOOK LIKE YOUR AVERAGE SWEATSHIRT, BUT WITH THIS
HOODIE BUDDY WHICH HAS THE EARBUDS BUILT IN, YOU CAN PLUG IN,
TUNE UP, AND ROCK OUT AT ALL TIMES

THEY'RE EVEN WASHABLE, SO YOU CAN STAY AS FRESH AS YOUR JAMS.

JUST BEWARE: IT'S A LOT EASIER TO GET SONGS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD.
LITERALLY!

SO WHAT DO YOU THINK, ARE "HOODIE BUDDIES" THE NEXT BIG THING?
ROCK ON OVER TO CHANNELONE DOT COM TO TELL US WHAT YOU
THINK. AND IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT YOU THINK IS THE NEXT BIG
THING. SEND IT ON OVER.

OK WE AREN'T SKIPPING A BEAT-- IT'S TIME FOR THE WEEK IN RAP.

Flocab, we're back on your TV,

We rap strong but we also rap weekly,

The Week in Rap, yes indeedy,

And we're old school like a tipi,

This week Obama gave the state of the union,

Why did he do that? It's in the constitution,

He wants to get business booming,

'Cause lately it's been snoozing,

said, this is America, "we do big things,"

Both parties sat together, not to hold hands,

But they did get close like a slow dance,

Tunisians got rid of their president,

Who ruled with an iron-fist and no benefits,

The people spoke, they wanted none of it,

They demanded a brand new government,
That spirit is spreading all over,

Yemen and Egypt, the people are bolder,

I mean their taking it to the streets,

Where they're clashing with the riot police,

This week was so cold I was freezing,

But the arctic is warm, it's kind of freakish,

And in Moscow, they had a bomb explode,

Who are the terrorists? We don't know,

China has new jets radar can't see,

But the technology might not be Chinese,

I mean. the design might have been nabbed

From an American jet crash a few years back,

Now Americans aren't living as long,

'Cause we smoke and we eat whatever we want,

And more than half of students are bad at science,

It's important - are y'all even trying?

Think of all the apps you could be designing,

All the diseases you could be curing,

All of the technology

So crack the books,

Lots of Oscars looks for the k-k-King's Speech,

More than True Grit and Black Swan, capisce?

Shout to the 6th graders who blogged with me,
Flocab on the track, like it ought to be

[SHELBY]

ALRIGHT THAT DOES IT FOR TODAY'S SHOW. I'M SHELBY HOLLIDAY-
HAVE AN AWESOME WEEKEND AND WE'LL BE BACK ON MONDAY WITH
MORE!
