					Case One – Beginnings

Prologue (Non-Interactive Cut scene)

SCENE – Public house, darkness

A man standing in the middle of a chalk symbol on the ground. The Symbol is a circle with a
plus sign drawn through it. The man is clearly frightened yet doesn’t move from his spot, a
hooded/obscured woman (Selena Davies) comes out of the shadows with a knife in her hand.
The screen fades to black as the man screams.

SCENE - Valerie’s flat

Valerie is sat at a desk reading a journal when the phone goes off. She picks it up and it’s Sam on
the other side who tells her that there has been a murder and that if she wants the story then
she should get down there.

VALERIE
Hello?

SAM
Hey Val its Sam

VALERIE
Hey Sam, what’s up?

SAM
Now don’t say I don’t return favours but I know work has been a little slow for you lately. There
has been a rather strange murder which I think you would be interested in covering.

VALERIE
What do you mean strange?

SAM
I think it would be better if you came down here and found out yourself. But don’t say
how you knew about it or it’s my ass on the line.

VALERIE
Where are you?

SAM
The Apple and Sage, it’s in Lower Hallowell on St George’s road. Know where I mean?

Valerie
I know, I’ll be right there. Thanks for this Sam.

Sam
Yeah yeah. But now we’re even (laugh). See you in a few.
As Valerie puts the phone down she tells herself she shouldn’t leave without her journalist
equipment.

PUZZLE - Collect all of Valerie’s equipment

 Valerie’s equipment consists of a pen and notebook, a roll of film and camera, a
        Dictaphone and a small torch.
 The pen and notebook is on Valerie’s bed along with the torch.
 The camera is on the desk Valerie starts off standing next to. The Dictaphone is on a
        modern style stack of shelves.
 Once two of the items are picked up, the telephone will go again. If Valerie answers the
phone it will be a cold caller to which she hangs up and makes a quip about them.

Bloody cold callers, I wish it was their jobs that were being cut rather than important
        ones.

 Once the four items are collected the player will then be allowed to leave the room
where the world map will appear of Lower Hallowell, all the areas will be greyed out and
on selection the Apple and Sage will be the only thing standing out.

Act 1

SCENE – Apple and Sage, Day

Valerie meets Sam outside the Apple and Sage which has been cordoned off by police tape, a
small crowd of disgruntled people are outside. Valerie tells the player before dialogue starts that
she gets the feeling something is watching her.

SAM
Inside before they finish their break.

VALERIE
Nice to see you too.

The two walk inside the pub. Inside, the body of a man is lying on the floor. The stools, chairs
and tables have been neatly stacked on the outskirts of the room to make more space.

SAM
The truth of the matter is…. We have no idea how he died.

VALERIE
Have you even looked at the body?

SAM
We have, but we can’t move it until coroner’s get here”

VALERIE
And you wonder why you don’t get promoted, too afraid to bend the rules”
SAM
Val… I’m a cop. It’s my job to make sure the rules don’t get bent or broken.

Control returns to Valerie and she can look around the pub for clues but Sam will stop her from
going outside.

INVESTIGATION - Find out How the Victim Died

 There are four clues and a collectable in this segment.
 Also Valerie can question Sam on top of general social chit chat.

INTERVIEW WITH SAM

o “So you have no ideas about this murder at all?”
o “This wasn’t what I had in mind when you said it was your turn to take us somewhere
     interesting”
o “What are you hiding me from exactly?”
   o “Goodbye”

o When questioned about the murder, Sam will tell Valerie that the person was found
dead by the landlord when he was going to open up. So the approximate time of death
was between closing time and opening time.
o When the social option is chosen Sam will make a sarcastic joke about the murder and
     how romantic it all is.
o When asked about who she is hiding Valerie from Sam will tell Valerie about Andrew
Cream and how he would arrest both of them for tampering with a crime scene.

 When Valerie investigates the area the clues that can be collected are as follows -

 Investigating the victim’s wrists will tell the player that the victim was not tied up in any
       way.
 Investigating the victim’s chest will tell the player that there is a torn part of the victim’s
shirt where a knife has entered but there is only a stab scar.
 Investigating a watch on the floor next to the victim will give the time of death as
       midnight exactly.
 Investigating the chalk on the floor will cause Valerie to move the body to reveal the full
       pagan symbol on the floor.

 When Valerie attempts to move the body she will tell Sam to go outside as to prevent
anything incriminating and to keep her conscience clear.
 When Valerie puts the body back and moves away Andrew Cream will show up and
promptly start to grill Valerie about why she is there. Valerie will explain she is a
journalist for a local news station that has been sent to cover the murder.
 Cream will kick Valerie out and she will not be able to return inside the pub until the
       crime scene has been cleared.
 Regardless of which clues have or have not been obtained Cream will appear after
Valerie discovers the symbol on the ground.
 All clues that Valerie has discovered will be written down in her notebook in the clues
       section.

 The mirror shard collectable will be given to Valerie when she has been forced from the
pub, a figure in a suit walking very briskly will bump into her and storm off leaving the
       fragment behind.
 When Valerie picks up the fragment and shouts after the person they will have
       disappeared.
 Sam will appear and after they talk about Cream, Sam will send Valerie to a Pagan shop
in Lower Hallowell to investigate the mark on the floor.
 Sam will also remind Valerie that she has Sam’s phone number and to call if she finds
       anything.

SCENE - Vernal Equinox

Valerie goes to the Wicca shop; it is a rundown dusty place with plenty of books, charms, jars
and other paraphernalia. Valerie can choose to look around the shop where she will comment
on various items.

 Spellbooks - If I had to use this much paper to follow a practice that worships the earth, I
would have to wear a grass dress too.

 Charms- That pendant would look fantastic in my apartment if there was a set.

 Jars of remedies- Who thought it was ever a good idea to cut a boil open and shove
       THOSE into the wound.

 A collectable mirror shard can be seen on a shelf which Valerie can collect.

When the player decides to carry on the story, Valerie will talk to the shopkeeper (Eden) who
will begin as an absent minded lady and will be incredibly helpful to Valerie about the earth
symbol and about the pentagram on a whole. When Valerie tells Eden about the murder, she
changes to a more worried and concerned. She calls to an assistant to cover the shop and leaves
in a hurry where Valerie follows unseen.

EDEN
Welcome to Vernal Equinox, how may I help you?

VALERIE
I need some help with this symbol, can you identify it.

EDEN
Let me see here, oh this is the symbol for the earth.

VALERIE
The earth? As in the ground we are standing on?

EDEN
Exactly, it’s representative for the earth element on the pagan pentagram.
VALERIE
So my murderer is a pagan then. I see well thank you very much.

EDEN
May I ask where you found this symbol? It’s a little hobby of mine to find out where the craft
is being practiced.

VALERIE
The floor of a pub….. Underneath a murder victim.

EDEN
Oh…. Well how horrible…

VALERIE
Yes, do you know any idea why there would be a symbol of the earth under the body of a dead
man.

EDEN
I…I have no idea, excuse me I have to go meet a client.

VALERIE
That isn’t suspicious at all.

EDEN
Sarah, can you take care of the shop until I get back?

VALERIE
I should see where she is going.

EDEN
Excuse me.

VALERIE
Of course, thank you for your assistance.

Eden will leave the area and Valerie will tell the player that she should follow Eden.

On the world map a new location will show up called Back Alley. When Valerie travels there a
cut scene will play. Valerie sneaks behind a garbage bin and watches Eden. A woman
approaches Eden and the two talk about the murder.

Eden demands the woman turns herself into the police for using Wicca for evil, the woman then
remarks on how her work is for the lord before pointing at the floor where the symbol for water
an upside down triangle is placed. The alley then explodes and Valerie is thrown through into
the mirror world.
Act 2

In the mirror world, the alley is the same however the colour is black and white only. An
inexplicable light source is emanating where Eden stood and the large mirror is smashed into
pieces.

My first thought was am I dead? But I guess that death would involve less pain and third degree
burns. I think I was thrown through the mirror. But how? And why? It looks like I haven’t moved
but everything is all black and white.

Control will return to Valerie as she can explore the area.

PUZZLE - Discover Where You Are and How To Escape

 If the player examines the broken mirror Valerie will comment on how there is colour on
the other side. She will reach out to touch it, her finger will pass through and she will
quickly retract it due to the heat from the explosion.

It looks like the blackened remains of the alley; it feels like a draft is coming from it. I reached out
my hand and touched the fragment; my finger went straight through the surface! Yeow! I
should really have listened to my mother when she told me never to stick my finger in unknown
substances. If I can stick my finger through a shard, maybe I can fit through a mirror to get back
to my world and out of wherever the hell I am. I just hope I can and I wonder where there is a
mirror big enough.

 On the world map the Wicca shop will be available and Valerie will be able to travel
        there.
 When Valerie travels there it looks the same except for the black and white. There isn’t
anything impeding Valerie from going through to the back rooms. Examining the same
objects from the real world will make Valerie tell the player how she shouldn’t be
window shopping at a time like this.
 In the back rooms there is a large mirror in the corner of a store room that Valerie can
use to go back into the real world.

 Back in the real world Valerie is still in the store room of the Wicca shop, she can look
around and examine some items including a box of chalk and a pagan shrine.

 The mirror - I don’t exactly want to go back to wherever that was.
 Box - There is some allegedly blessed chalk in here, there is no point in taking any.
 Dusty Shelves - This place really mustn’t get a lot of customers with dust this thick.
 Shrine - It doesn’t come as a surprise that the shopkeeper is ….. was a practitioner.

 When Valerie tries to leave the door is locked, she curses the door and is about to bang
for help before realising that she can’t explain to who saves her how exactly she ended
up on the wrong side of a locked door with no other exits.
 A window is on the ceiling however Valerie cannot reach it or find anything that would
support her weight that’s high enough. The player’s only choice is to go back through to
the mirror world much to Valerie’s apprehension.
Just my luck, I get caught up in an explosion, thrown into some crazy Mickey Mouse world and
when I get back the only way out is locked. …. No I can’t shout for help, how am I supposed to
tell whoever comes. I didn’t break in, I stepped through a mirror into a locked storeroom
honest…. There’s nothing here that can support me to get to that window, looks like I have to go
back through the mirror and hopefully find another mirror that is in a more accessible area.

 When Valerie goes back through into the mirror world, the door is open and Valerie can
        leave.
 However she notices she cannot leave the shop as outside is pitch black, instead Valerie
decides to look around for something that may help her with the door. The player can
now look around the entirety of the shop.
 In the back room Valerie can pick up the spell book under the pretence of looking up the
other symbol on the ground and how it connects to the first one.
 In the main part of the shop Valerie can look around the cash register to find a locked
draw. In the final part of the shop which is an office, Valerie can pick up a small key
which will unlock the draw in the main room.
 Inside the draw is a larger key with a storeroom label on it and a list of customers with
        things they purchased.

 Items available in Wicca shop (otherworld)
 Spell book - Integral to story.
 Office Key - Needed to open store draw
 Inventory - List of customers and items bought, used later on in case.
 Storeroom Key - Needed to leave the storeroom.
 Mirror Shard - Located in the office in a broken frame beside a plant.

 When Valerie returns to the real world, the spell book on the shrine has gone as it is
        now in Valerie’s bag.
 Valerie can unlock the store room door and leave where she calls Sam telling her to
        meet up at Valerie’s apartment.

SCENE - Valerie’s Flat

 When the player goes back to the apartment Sam and Valerie will talk about the murder
and the mirror world which Valerie demonstrates by sticking her hand inside the
        bathroom mirror.
 Sam will then inform Valerie on the clues she may have missed in the pub and Valerie in
turn will tell Sam about the second murder and the spell book.
 As the two read through the spell book and find a ritual of magic banishment where
when five ‘witches’ are killed at specific points of a pentagram all ‘witches’ within the
pentagram will lose their powers permanently.
 Sam traces out a point on the map where a previous murder took place a week ago
which makes the third point of the pentagram.
 Deducing that the fourth and fifth murder are going to take place in a church and a five
star hotel. Valerie can also go back to the back alley to investigate there.
SCENE - Back Alley
 The back alley didn’t suffer much structural damage in the explosion, rather a few cars
are pushed to the side and a black crater where Eden got blown up.
 Valerie and Sam look around to find clues.

INVESTIGATION - Check The Site For Clues

 There is no mirror here for Valerie to go through and only two items to investigate.

 A crucifix with the name Davies inscribed on the back is on the floor near where Selena
        was standing.
 The other object to investigate is a white residue with shrapnel in the black crater which
is the remains of a bomb used to kill Eden.

Act 3

PATH 1 - If Church Is Chosen First

SCENE - Church

Another victim will be lying dead upon the altar, with the symbol for fire (an upright triangle).

As Sam and Valerie go into the church a van with a company logo Veritas Industries will drive
away almost knocking Valerie over. They wonder if they just saw the murderer but the van
drove too fast to tell.

INVESTIGATION - Find Clues in the Church

There are three clues in the church. Two are in the real world and one in the mirror world.

 The first clue is the pagan symbol itself which again Valerie needs to move the body onto
the floor in order to see fully.
 The second clue is on the body which is a letter to the victim from a sister in the church
asking them to come as soon as possible regarding a missing relative. The letter is signed
        Sister S Davies.
 The third clue is located in Sister Davies’ room which can only be unlocked by going into
the mirror world; once Valerie goes into the mirror world via a large mirror near the
altar she can access Davies’ room as the door is unlocked.
 However there is no key in the mirror world only a small mirror Valerie can stick her
head through, she then sees that if she had something that could extend her reach she
could grab a piece of paper on the bed below her.
 Going back to the normal world Valerie can ask Sam for some tweezers which Valerie
can then use to pick up the paper which is a receipt for a hotel room in the fifth murder
        area.
 The mirror shard collectable is in the main area of the church behind a gilded gate which
can only be grabbed once Sam has given Valerie the tweezers and before she gives them
        back.
Items/Clues for Church first choice

 Pagan symbol - The symbol for fire confirms this murder is linked to the other two.
 Letter- A letter from the murderer to the victim asking them to come to the church,
Valerie gets the murderer’s full name from this which is reaffirmed by the crucifix if
       found by this point.
 Receipt- A receipt for a room in the hotel where the fifth murder will take place. It is
       named under a pseudonym.
 Tweezers- A pair of tweezers given to Valerie by Sam and upon leaving the church will be
       returned to her.
 Mirror shard- Located in a reliquary in the main area, only accessible while Valerie has
       tweezers.

SCENE - Hotel

Valerie and Sam make it to the hotel where they check into the room next to the one indicated
on the receipt picked up earlier. Valerie goes into the mirror world via the room cupboard to go
to Selena’s room while Sam knocks on the door to distract her. When she emerges in Selena’s
room, she is seen.

Boss Battle – Selena Davies

SELENA
How did you get into my room?

VALERIE
1. Drop the act sister we know you killed those people! (-10 morale)
2. We would like to ask you a few questions regarding some murders (morale unaffected)
3. Are you Sister Selena Davies? (morale unaffected)

SELENA
1. Who do you think you are coming into the house of the lord and accusing people of cardinal
sins!
2. Murders? How awful, why would you come to me and not the police?
3. Yes I am, how may I help you child?

VALERIE
1. You were the last person a man talked to before he was found bludgeoned on your alter; I
have a letter that asks him to come to your church from you. (Use letter +20 morale)
2. The symbol on the floor here matches a similar symbol found at your church! (Symbol on the
Altar +10 morale)
3. Your name is here along with some purchases from a Wicca shop in town, shortly after the
owner was found murdered. (Use inventory from shop morale unaffected)

SELENA
1. You dare accuse a sister of the cloth of murder because I choose to do the work of the
lord! (Selena -20 morale)
2. What is this? Someone has desecrated the altar, how low will people go these days. (Selena -
10 morale)
3. I assure you that is coincidence only, I needed some chalk and the shop was the closest place
available, the owner was murdered you say? Just terrible. (morale unaffected)

The following options replace the previously numbered options.

VALERIE
1. You were also seen talking to the owner of the Wicca shop in the alley at the same time
she was murdered! (+20 morale)
2. These symbols were found at the sites of three other murders which we have proof that you
were at the site of at least two including your church. (+10 morale)
3. Why did you do it? Just come clean already (-20 morale)

SELENA
1. It must have been some other nun these witnesses saw. (-20 morale)
2. That is merely coincidence, I go to a lot of places to do the work of the lord. (-20 morale)
3. I haven’t done anything, stop wasting my time before I have you arrested.

Final Round (When Selena has lost 80% morale)

VALERIE
1. You have no leg to stand on, why would a nun resort to Wicca practices to murder people.
(Stacking the evidence against Selena to make her give up)
2. I’m no Christian but I’m sure it’s one of the ten commandments of thou shalt not kill! Do the
right thing here and turn yourself over to the police. (Appeal to her religious nature to make her
give up)
3. Does doing the work of the lord really involve killing people? Would God really let you into
Heaven? (Make her question her fanaticism)
4. Admit Defeat

When options 1-3 are selected Selena will instead of giving herself over, will stab herself with a
blade with a crucifix handle and fall over. Sam goes over to the body while Valerie moves to the
potential victim who says his name is Liam and goes for a shot in the dark and asks if Valerie is
doing anything later.

Option 1 - Rationality wins again over religion, it’s terrible when people go to extreme lengths in
the name of a magical pixie in the sky.
Option 2 - It’s a shame when people are so jaded in their beliefs they will kill themselves for no
reason, if there was a heaven she wouldn’t be in it.
Option 3 - Religion always was a nice excuse for nut jobs to avoid persecution and even indulge
in their psychopathic ways as long as they have a symbol to hide behind. Nothing spectacular
happened when Selena impaled herself on her altar, the ritual was unfinished and a murderer
was brought to a twisted sense of justice. Also got myself a hot date out of this, guess that’s
karmic re-balance for almost being blown up and somehow able to teleport through mirrors.
PATH 2 - If Hotel Is Chosen First

As Sam and Valerie approach the hotel Andrew Cream will stop them in the lobby both
surprised at Sam for showing up so fast and angry at Valerie for showing up at another crime
scene.

Some fast talking by Sam gets her off the hook for bringing a journalist into a police area and the
two find out there has been a suicide in one of the rooms. Cream leads the two too the outside
of the crime scene and tells Sam to get to work while telling Valerie to scram.

PUZZLE - Gain Access To The Room

 To gain access to the room Valerie must go down to the lobby and check in to the room
next to the murder scene, upon coming back up Cream again tells Valerie to leave who
insists that it isn’t against the law to rent a hotel room for a night.

As Sam remerges from the crime scene, Cream tells her to get rid of Valerie and goes into the
room. Sam then tells you that the victim has been hanged by a rope and it looks like suicide
however another symbol is on the floor next to the chair.

INVESTIGATION - Try To Discover the Cause of Death

Valerie can now ask Sam to distract Cream outside the crime scene while Valerie investigates
using a mirror inside the wardrobe of her room. When Valerie enters the crime scene in the
mirror world there is a clue to be noticed that there is a bright light emanating from the ceiling
fan. In the real world Valerie can find three more clues.

 The first is the pagan symbol for air which is an upright triangle with a horizontal line
       going through the middle.
 The second is on the floor which is a broken piece of chalk which still lays credence to a
       suicide.
 The third clue is the phone which Valerie notices that a call has been made recently and
on redial an answer machine in the church responds.

Items/Clues for Hotel

 Air symbol - Connects the murders to the other two
 Broken chalk- broken off when the symbol was drawn on the floor, can be traced to
Selena when referenced with the inventory acquired earlier.
 Phone- Tells the player that the victim was previously in contact with someone from the
       church.
 Mirror shard- In the mirror world in the bathroom of the crime scene.

SCENE - Church
Valerie and Sam enter the church and see a man standing near the altar, they run over to him
and explain to him that his life is in danger. He responds by saying the sister has gone to get his
missing younger brother and will be back shortly.
Valerie and Sam tell them about the other murders and their relation to the Wicca craft. On
talking about the craft the man takes them seriously and tries to leave when Selena shows up.

Boss Battle – Selena Davies

SELENA
Welcome to St Antony’s how may I help you.

VALERIE

VALERIE
1. You were the last person a man talked to before he was found hung from a fan, I have a
recording that proves it and people saw you enter and leave his room! (Use phone recording
+20 morale)
2. The symbol on your altar was made with chalk found at a murder scene along with a similar
symbol! (Use chalk +10 morale)
3. Your name is here along with some purchases from a Wicca shop in town, shortly after the
owner was found murdered. (Use inventory from shop morale unaffected)

SELENA
1. You dare accuse a sister of the cloth of murder because I choose to do the work of the
Lord outside the church! (Selena -20 morale)
