Meeting was called to order at 1:02 p.m. The minutes from the December 11, 2007 meeting and
today’s agenda was approved without corrections.
Employee of the Year Process
Brian Mallory, former Staff Council chair, volunteered to come to today’s meeting and lend his
expertise on the Classified Employee of the Year selection process, which had been revised in
2007. Brian distributed a handout on the requirements and procedures. (He noted that this
document is also available on the P drive under Staff Council.) The composition of the Selection
Committee was briefly discussed. Human Resources will provide Staff Council with a list of the
employees who are eligible for this award. This list, along with the Nomination Form and
Nominator’s Evaluation, will be distributed to the university community by email at the end of
January. After two weeks, the nominees’ names will be forwarded to the Chancellor and
University Communications for publication in the Register. Once the forms and evaluations
have been received, the Selection Committee will meet to decide on the recipient of the award.
Additional details concerning the recognition luncheon for all nominees and ordering of
certificates and plaques will be coordinated by Monica Wienand in the Chancellor’s Office.
Brian Mallory, Teresa Truesdale and Bridget Kirkland volunteered to serve on the Selection
Committee. Brian stressed the need to establish and follow a schedule for this process.
Staff Handbook. Teresa questioned Brian as to whether the comments included on the
current draft of the Staff Handbook had been made or were only for discussion. Brian
replied that Sheryl Turner-Watts will work to get the suggested changes finalized and
sent on to Columbia. These changes have not been included on the web version of the
Staff Handbook (P drive).
A discussion followed on the Content Management System (CMS), whereby any group
or department across campus can update and maintain their websites following training
from Nick Catto in University Communications. We will need to determine the extent of
revisions (agendas, minutes, schedule of meetings, etc.) to the Staff Council webpage and
how often the site will need to be updated. Once notified, Nick will make the changes or
will train another staff council member or a reliable student assistant.
Easter Egg Hunt. Easter this year falls on March 23rd. It was decided to hold the egg
hunt the day before (March 22nd). Brian Mallory volunteered to be the Easter Bunny
again. It was suggested to emphasize that the event started at 11:00 a.m. in the publicity.
A suggestion was also made to look into “photos with the Easter Bunny.”
Training. Teresa will meet with Sheryl Turner-Watts regarding training. A brief
discussion followed regarding the quality of past training sessions and possible topics
(email, new phone system, etc.). A suggestion was made for shorter sessions; half day or
full day sessions are difficult for staff from many areas across campus to attend.
Mobile Meals. Staff Council has been contacted by Mobile Meals for volunteers. This
will be discussed in next month’s meeting.
