                               BIOT 1103 – Introduction To The Old Testament

   I.       BIOT 1103 – Intro to the Old Testament
            Course Description: A general introduction to the background and history of the Hebrew
            people in the Old Testament period. This embraces the sacred writings, prophets, and culture
            of the Hebrew people against the historical, social, political, literary, economic, and religious
            background of mankind to the end of the Old Testament period.

   II.      Course Text(s):
            a. Required
                   i. Discovering the Old Testament: Alex Varughese, Editor
                  ii. The Holy Bible: NAS, RSV, or NKJV

   III.     Course Outcomes:
            a. The student will be able to articulate the historical flow of the Old Testament.
            b. The student will be able to identify the cultural, political and economic elements found in the
               Jewish heritage.
            c. The student will be able to articulate the theological dimensions of the Old Testament.
            d. The student will be able to identify and articulate the flow of each of the books of the Old
               Testament.
            e. The student will be able to identify the major literary types of the material in the Old Testament
               and articulate their characteristics.
            f. The student will be introduced to the inductive method of Biblical studies.

   IV.      Course Requirements:
            a. The student is expected to complete all assignments on time. All work turned in late will be
               reduced by one letter grade. After this, the grade will be reduced one letter grade for each
               additional day the work is late.
            b. Attendance – Attendance will be kept for this class. A student’s seventh – tenth absence will
               result in a letter grade of (F) for the course. Each absence beyond the second will result in a 2.5%
               reduction in the student’s final grade.
                        A student who is absent for approved university related activities would be excused from
               these criteria. However all quizzes, test and assignments must be completed the first class after
               the absence.
                        Three tardies will equal one absence.
                        A student, who completes the semester without any absences, will be given a 5% credit
                        of their cumulative points toward their final grade.
            c. Students are expected to conduct themselves in an appropriate and respectful manner. The
               student is expected to complete all assignments, readings and tests in an honest and ethical
               manner. All work is to be completed individually unless otherwise explicitly stated.

   V.       Class Procedure:
            a. This class will consist of discussion and lecture.
            b. Any cheating in or out of class will result in a failing (F) grade for the class. Cheating would be
               considered copying others work, taking one’s work from a commentary or allowing another
               student to do one’s work.

   VI.      Assignments and Grading:
            a. Five tests worth (100 pts) each will be given. Each test will consist of matching, multiple choice,
               true/false and essay.
            b. One inductive Bible study assignment worth (100 pts) will be required. The IBSM will need to
               be typed using Times New Roman font, 12 pt, double-spaced, 1 inch margins.
            c. The student will complete all readings assignments from Discovering the Old Testament worth
               10 pts each for a total of (200 pts). The student will hand in a ½ page paragraph discussing one
               element that was unique to them. This should be done using Times New Roman font, 12 pt, and
               double spaced, 1-inch margins.
            d. The Student will take 20 quizzes worth 10 pts each (200 pts) over their assigned readings from
               the Old Testaments.

         e. Grading Scale
                   i. Five Tests – (100 pts each)                                          500 pts
                  ii. Inductive Bible study – (One 100 pts)                                100 pts
                iii. Reading Assignments – (20 x 10 pts each)                              200 pts
                 iv. Quizzes – (20 x 10 pts each)                                          200 pts
