Jello well-o lab Problem: What detergents contain enzymes? Procedure: 1) Fill petri dish with jello. Let gel. 2) Remove “plugs” of jello w/ a straw. 3) Make 10% solutions of various detergents. 4) Measure diameter of each cylindrical wells in jello. Record correctly! 5) Pipette detergents into wells . Again, record detergent name correctly! Label pipette to use on day 2. 6) Leave out on counter overnight. Let set at least 20 hrs. 7) On day 2, use corresponding pipette to REMOVE detergent solution. 8) Remeasure diameter. Record. Data Table Well letter Detergent Initial Final %change diameter diameter A B C D E F G % change in diameter:= final – initial/ initial x 100 Questions 1) How can you tell if the detergent contained an enzyme? 2) Chemically, why was there a change in diameter? 3) Explain why a detergent might be seen as “better” due to the presence of enzymes?
