 Allow two minutes for pupils to write down five things they know about pregnancy, and Resources
then they work with a partner to swap ideas and add to their lists.  Student Book pages 38 to 39
 Pupils solve anagrams of words used in this lesson, e.g.
BY ROME (EMBRYO) GRANT PEN (PREGNANT)

USE OFT (FOETUS) SECT SMELL (STEM CELLS)

Learning outcomes
 recall changes that occur in the development from zygote to blastocyst to embryo to foetus to baby

Pupils use what they find out to draw a pregnancy timeline using worksheet B2: 2.2(1) to
guide them. The amount of detail will depend on the ability level of pupils.

Learning outcomes
 be able to discuss the scientific evidence that contributes to the debate about the legality and age of termination of a foetus
                                Teaching and learning activities Resources

Ask pupils about what UK law says about abortion. After finding out what pupils think is the
legal position, give them facts about what the law actually says. Ask pupils to relate the legal
position to what they have found out about the development of the foetus. They could mark
on their timelines the time when abortion is legal. Ask pupils to prepare a debate about the
justification for abortion. They should be encouraged to include scientific evidence in their
Ask pupils to answer question 5 on page 39 of the Student Book.  Student Book page 39

Learning outcomes
 understand that stem cells differentiate into all other types of cell but lose this ability as the animal matures

Read through and discuss the high demand section, then answer questions 6 to 9.  Student Book page 39

 Pupils write a list of five things learnt in the lesson. After two minutes they pair up and amend lists then feed back to build up
a class list on the board.
