INFERTILITY IN WOMEN

A case control study on the selected risk factors of
female infertility among fifty females attending the Infertility clinic,
SAT Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram was conducted during the
period October-December 2008.The data was collected from fifty
cases and fifty controls, matched for age, using a pre-structured
questionnaire. The data collected included menstrual details, uterine
or ovarian disorders, genito-urinary infections, systemic illness,
hyperprolactinemia and weight gain. Data was analysed to find out
risk factors and its association using Odds ratio, chi-square and
Major conclusions obtained are:-
Females with duration of menstrual cycle >35 days have 3.6
times risk of becoming infertile than others.
Females having Hyperprolactinemia are at 7.6 times risk of
Females with recent weight gain are at 6.8 times risk of
Females who are overweight are having 3.8 times risk of
becoming infertile, compared to others.
Those with ovarian dysfunctions are at 23 times risk of
