purpose:                    People credited with this unit standard are able to handle the
                            lifeline and/or umbilical, and operate the surface supply
                            panel.

entry information:          Prerequisites: Unit 6401, Provide first aid and Unit 6402,
                            Provide resuscitation level 2, or demonstrate equivalent
                            skills and knowledge; and hold a current Medical Clearance
                            to dive and occupational-specific certificate of competence;
                            and 2000 minutes logged dive time.

accreditation option:       Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and
                            industry.

moderation option:          A centrally established and directed national moderation
                            system has been set up by the Dive Industry Training
                            Organisation.

special notes:                Industry criteria refer to diving practice complying with the
                              requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act
                              1992 and subsequent regulations relating to Occupational
                              Diving; and comply with the theory and practice
                              requirements of the British Health and Safety Executive
                              (HSE) 1990 to ensure the international standard is
                              maintained.      All practice also complies with Accident
                              Rehabilitation & Compensation Insurance Corporation and
                              Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) guidelines.

Handle the lifeline and/or umbilical.

1.1         Weight belt is secure around diver and quick release meets operational
            requirements.

1.2         Assistance with dressing includes breathing apparatus and meets industry
            criteria.

            Range:       straps, surface supply connections, no leaks.

1.3         Assistance with face mask and/or helmet meets industry technical and safety
            criteria.

            Range:       straps and/or locking neck ring, umbilical secured.

1.4         Pre-dive checks ensure the functioning of non-return valves in helmets and
            main supply to meet industry criteria.

1.5         Umbilical procedures are included in diver’s surface tender practice.

            Range:       stowage, handling, strains.

1.6         Maintenance of helmet and band mask meets manufacturer’s specifications
            and industry criteria.

            Range:       supply and exhaust valve faults, helmet damage, loose fittings,
                         locking mechanism wear, seals or ‘o’ ring faults.

2.1         Pre-dive procedures meet industry criteria.

            Range:       seal fitting and functioning, main and reserve air supply
                         connections, in-board ends of umbilical connections, dedicated
                         umbilicals for each diver, gauge operation, in-line filtration system
                         drainage, air supply analysis.

2.2      Umbilicals are blown through before connecting to masks or helmets.

2.3      Operation of surface panel with divers in the water meets industry criteria.

         Range:       air supply regulation in relation to depth and work rate, advice for
                      supervisor regarding pressures, change to reserve, permission for
                      taking diver “off air”, communication.
