                                    Thanks in Giving
Respond to God’s incredible gifts by living a life of generosity.

Hook – Bring in the Camel (5min)
  - Man in poor village comes to pastor asking for advice – family can’t stand each
other, fighting all the time, 9 people in 2 rooms. Advice – bring in the camel from
outside for 1 week. What? Ok. 1 week later returns – We love each other! We
appreciate all the ways we go out of each other’s way – and that we are not that
      stinking camel!
  - *Thankfulness – starts with awareness. Grows to a responding to God – that
changes everything. We have talked about both of these, and responding with
speaking, singing, serving and sharing (giving).
  - Today I want to talk about the last one.

The Perspective of Generosity (10min)
  - Bulletin/newsletter thought – I usually start by thinking of my material
      possessions. How about you?
  - *Perspective: 2 Corinthians 8:10 (p.886) – Jesus was rich, but became poor – a
bigger blessing – relationships, salvation, unending love, secure future, hope,
purpose in life, family. The Greatest Gifts!
  - Why were the early Christians so generous? Perspective!
  - *1 Chronicles 29:10-17 (p.332) – bg – David giving a TON (many tons!) out of his
own treasures – something that will outlast him – and others follow. What is his
      perspective?
         1. It all belongs to God.
         2. Giving is a privilege.
         3. In Jesus we have the greatest gifts. (Money can’t buy, though we try.)

My Money and Spain (5min)
  - Asked by a few people if the church paid, or if I did. Free vacation?
  - Had the right to have it paid for – send a group without it? Loss of sleep, extra
work before and after, Facebook updates, scoping out train stations and
schedules, counseling and teaching and praying and thinking.
  - But I did pay for it – money set aside 2 years ago for missions; our denomination
pays for ½ of a church planter’s trip, too.
  - 5 kids, 1 income and things can be tight – but I believe in the power of missions.
  - More questions? Please talk to ME about ME, not others. Please.

Mailing: 913 Floyd Ave, Modesto, CA 95350

Active Thanks in Giving (10min)
  - Jesus – talked a lot about money – more than heaven and hell combined!
o *Matt 6:20-21 (p.737; see SoMt series, too)
o *Your spending reveals your heart.
o *Your spending moves your heart.
 “Where your treasure is” – show me your budget or bank ledger!
Goes for church, too – other than staff, most of ours is on missions.
o RESPOND by living and giving generously – heart on HIM.
  - Back to Corinth – Paul raising a Collection. Background – started strong, but
      fizzled (8:10-11).
  - *Action: 2 Cor 9:6-8 (p.886)
          1. You can’t outgive God – see giving as investing in the Kingdom (cf. Jesus,
              heart and treasure)
          2. Decide ahead what to give. Budget, not guilt – so important!
          3. Give cheerfully – you are only giving BACK to God.
          4. Trust God and learn to live with less.
  - Perspective and Action – how are you doing?

Punch – Growing Generosity (5min)
  Story – Just Give $1
  - Giving is something you have to GROW in your life – man came to me, how
much to give? Now it was 0. Start by giving $1. I can do more! Then do more,
but every week give $1 – so that church will never be about wanting your
money. God wants ALL of you, not just your money! Followed up – did give that
$1. And has given some gifts bigger than that – especially to projects. Working
to have regular giving to the vision and budget of the church – hard discipline.
  - Get it into your kids if you can!
  - Average church giving – 2%; Americans (2007) spend the same amount on their
pets as giving to church; and more on weight-loss programs.
o Covenant Grove – an amazingly generous church! Not about amounts –
              about growing generosity!

  - Be AWARE, RESPOND to God’s gifts and blessings. Have the right PERSPECTIVE
and ACTION in giving – be thankful! Grow Gratitude in your life…

  - Colossians 2:7 - Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on
him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will
      overflow with thankfulness.

Mailing: 913 Floyd Ave, Modesto, CA 95350
