Functions:
Food cutting.
Play an important role in phonetics or speech.
Maintain a good esthetics.
.Guide the mandible posteriorly during the final phase of closing .4

                 Anomalies ?
                        Peg- shaped
                   large pointed tubercle
                    Missed Congenitally

Maxillary lateral incisor
  1. Labial aspect:
  • Geometric outline of crown: trapezoidal

  • Mesial outline of crown:slightly convex
  • Mesial contact area:
♣ At junction between middle and incisal 3rd

  • Distal contact area:
♣ At the center of the middle third
  • Distal outline of crown:more rounded
  • Incisal outline: curved, rounded. The distoincisal
angle being more rounded than the mesioincisal angle.
  • Cervical outline, convex rootwise
                                                               Prof Hanaa Aly
  • The root apex is inclined distal to midline
        Maxillary lateral incisor
2. Lingual aspect:

• tooth tapers toward the lingual
  mesial and distal marginal ridges
  are marked
• cingulum is usually prominent
• The incisal ridge is rounded and
  well developed
• lingual fossa [U- shaped] is more
  concave and circumscribed
                                      .

        Maxillary lateral incisor
3. Mesial aspect:
• Geometric outline of the crown
   :triangle
The mesial aspect is similar to •
            central incisor except:
-The crown is shorter and the •
                     root is longer.
-The incisal ridge is thicker •
and more round. Crest of curvature bucally?
                                        Crest of curvature lingually?
-The root appears as a tapered –
cone ends in a bluntly rounded
                            apex. Prof Hanaa Aly
4. Distal aspect:
   Similar to the mesial except:
   – crown appears shorter
     distally than it does mesially.
   – incisal edge appears thicker.
   – cervical line is shallower
     distally than mesially.
   – A developmental groove
     extending on the root
     surface may be present

                                       Prof Hanaa Aly
5. Incisal aspect:
Usually resembles that of the
   central incisor EXCEPT:
   more convexity labially and
   lingually than the central
   incisors.
Sometimes this tooth may
   resemble that of a small
   canine. In such case the
   labiolingual diameter may
   be greater than usual in
   comparison with the
   mesiodistal dimension.
