10
11 TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND M. ANDREW “ANDY”
12 JAMES, FORMER KERSHAW COUNTY EDUCATOR AND
13 SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER, FOR HIS THIRTY-FOUR
14 YEARS OF OUTSTANDING PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE
15 PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
16
17 Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South
18 Carolina General Assembly honor individuals who freely give of
19 their time and resources for the good of others; and
20
21 Whereas, M. Andrew “Andy” James, former Kershaw County
22 educator and school board member, has contributed thirty-four
23 years of invaluable public service to the citizens of the Palmetto
24 State and thereby deserves special recognition and thanks; and
25
26 Whereas, he learned an early lesson that education provides access
27 and access leads to opportunities. He devoted his professional life
28 to providing those opportunities to each and every child whose life
29 he touched. In the process, he forged lasting relationships with
30 students, parents, teachers, and administrators; and
31
32 Whereas, Andy began his educational career as a fifth-grade
33 teacher in the New Jersey Public School System. He later taught
34 math on the junior-high level and served as guidance counselor
35   and football coach at Burlington City High School, New Jersey;
36 and
37
38 Whereas, in 1976, he joined the Kershaw County Public School
39 system as a teacher at Baron DeKalb Elementary and coach at
40 Baron DeKalb High School. In 1977, he was assigned the dual role
41 of assistant principal at both Camden Elementary and Camden
42 Primary schools. The following year, he was named principal of

     [634] 1
1 Camden Elementary and served in that position until becoming the
2 principal of Pine Tree Hill Elementary in 1992. From 1995 to
3 1997, he worked as guidance counselor at the Continuous Learning
4 Center. Andy was elected in 1999 to the Kershaw County School
5 Board, where he served with distinction for twelve years, having
6 just retired from his position on the board in December 2010; and
 7
8 Whereas, he has been and continues to be engaged in many
9 community activities and maintains active membership in several
10 professional organizations. He has been an active member of the
11 Camden-Kershaw County Branch of the NAACP, the Black
12 Caucus, Cassatt Water Board, and the ALPHA Center. Those who
13 know him can attest to his energetic nature and desire to get
14 involved; and
15
16 Whereas, for his continued service and visionary leadership in the
17 Kershaw County community, the Camden-Kershaw County
18 Branch of the NAACP presented him with an award recognizing
19 those who have carried on Dr. King’s legacy at its celebration of
20 Martin Luther King, Jr., Day on January 17, 2011; and
21
22 Whereas, Andy James has found strength for his years of service
23 through the strong support of his family. He made the wise
24 decision to marry his dear wife, Daisy Goodwin James, a native of
25 Camden. Together they raised three fine children, Theron, Tanya,
26 and Jonathan, each of whom is a success in their own right; and
27
28 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly
29 recognize that the success of the State of South Carolina, the
30 strength of its communities, and the vitality of American society as
31 a whole depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of
32 individuals like Andy James who use their talents and resources to
33 serve others. Now, therefore,
34
35 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives
36 concurring:
37
38 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this
39 resolution, recognize and commend M. Andrew “Andy” James,
40 former Kershaw County educator and school board member, for
41 his thirty-four years of outstanding public service to the people of
42 South Carolina.
