                                                                                                                                                                                     for when family members and
                                                                                                                                                                                     friends came over.          Together,

                                                                                                                                                                                     cornbread at their side, the ladies
                                                                                                                                                                                     would chat and sew together.

                                                                 block. “Sun Bonnet Sue through the Years” is a quilt made up of twelve

                                                                                            least a few teachers whose classrooms
                                                                                            were alive with the joy of learning and who
                                                                                            imparted words of wisdom that still come
                                                                                            to mind now and then as we move forward
                                                                                  through our lives. For the past twenty-two years
                                                                                  Carl Mouton has been inspiring our young people as
                                                                                  Director of Bands at Oak Grove Junior High (now
                                                                                  Maumelle Middle School) and Oak Grove Senior
                                                                                  High (soon to move into the new Maumelle high
                                                                                  school currently under construction). Join me as we

                                                                                                                                            C.M.: I was surrounded by music growing up. My mom and grandma were pianists and organists and played
                                                                                                                                            in church. We had a piano at home, and naturally, they gave us kids some lessons! The lessons weren’t really

                                                                                                                                            Paducah, KY, I became drum major through 8th and
                                                                                                                                            9th grades and was drum major for my high school
                                                                                                                                            band for the next three years. I had also enjoyed
                                                                                                                                            sports and was a good athlete, but as my high school

                                                                                                                                            years were ending and I was considering a major in
                                                                                                                                            college, I realized that a life in sports would have a
                                                                                                                                            much shorter duration for me than a life in music. I’ve

                                                                                                                                            seen many star sports figures whose careers were
                                                                                                                                            over in a matter of a few years. I figured that once I
                                                                                                                                            could no longer long jump, for example, it’s over, but
                                                                                                                                            even when I’m 85 I will still be able to sit and make
                                                                                                                                            music! So because I’ve always been one to choose
                                                                                                                                            things that last, music was my obvious decision.
