key ingredient for students, graduates, and educators in Auburn University’s

          Horst H. Schulze
As the former president and chief operating officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Horst H.
Schulze created new definitions for the terms elegance, service and beauty. In his work with The Ritz-
Carlton, he developed one of the most recognizable international brands, and altered forever the very
nature of customer service.

A charismatic leader, an entrepreneur, and a man of prophetic vision and market savvy, he speaks to
every aspect of customer-based success. Under Schulze’s direction, The Ritz-Carlton Hotels won an
unprecedented two Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Awards in the service category. Schulze himself
was named Corporate Hotelier of the World by HOTELS magazine and was awarded the Ishikawa
Medal for his personal contribution to the quality movement. As president of The Ritz-Carlton, he
managed an operating budget of $1.2 billion and set an international standard for personalized service.

Today, he is president and CEO of The West Paces Hotel Group. Atlanta-based, The West Paces Hotel
Group was founded in 2002 when several former senior Ritz-Carlton corporate staff members joined
Schulze. West Paces is dedicated to creating and operating luxury hotels.

Schulze also serves as a director on several boards, including Reliance Trust Company, Cancer
Treatment Centers of America, and The Travel Institute.
