As only a small fraction of the wetlands that once covered California’s Great Central Valley
remain today, there is a critical need to educate the public about the importance of conserving
what little of this precious habitat remains. The Grassland Environmental Education Center
(GEECe) is a fieldtrip program that was established in 1995 as an opportunity for elementary
school students to learn about the ecologically significant wildlife habitats located in California’s
San Joaquin Valley. GEECe is located in Merced County, the heart of the Grasslands Ecological
Area (GEA). The 180, 000-acre GEA is the larges contiguous block of wetlands and wildlife
habitat remaining in California

families and schools as a center for learning and discovery. For children, it is first and
foremost a place to call their own, offering interactive exhibits and programs in a warm and
inviting setting. Its educational mission encompasses the themes of Connections,
Community, and Creativity. In its unique environment, children actively make connections
among ideas, people and cultures. The Museum's programs also encourage children to
define their role in and contribution to both local and global communities. Finally, as a
center for creative play and expression, Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose provides
opportunities for all of us to discover the world through the eyes of our children.

Downing Planetarium is public outreach. The planetarium is available to school and civic
groups four days per week on a year-round basis and runs public programs most
weekends. It has a 74-seat star theater with a 30-foot dome. The planetarium shows are run
with a Minolta MS-8 star projector, two video projectors, and 29 computer-controlled slide
projectors. Between May 2000, when the facility began giving sky-shows for schools and
the public, and March 2001, we have had over 23,000 visitors. Under construction is an
adjacent observatory, with a 16-inch telescope planned for classes and undergraduate
     research.

Thousands and thousands (the first of whom descended on ropes) have enjoyed and marveled at
this three million year old cave - including royalty and a president. Mercer Caverns has up-dated
the stairs, walkways and lighting though always cognizant of its responsibility to present this
living limestone cave in its original beauty. The management has carefully protected and
preserved these ancient formations and presented this gift of nature in such a historical manner
that the significance of its value makes a lasting impression upon all who visit.

Come and learn what goes on behind the scenes of a theatrical performance. Who
controls the lights? What makes the curtains rise or fall? The stage is a live audience
that needs people and lots of technical support to make the performance a hit.

At SJMA, gallery programs focus on a limited number of carefully selected objects rather than
visiting every exhibition in the Museum. After the gallery visit program we encourage
teachers and chaperones to spend extra time with students in the galleries visiting art works
and other exhibitions not covered in the lesson. The Gallery Visit focuses on three-
dimensional art; students will be exposed to a variety of mediums, styles and subjects matters.
They will learn about what a permanent collection is and how museums use them. In the
workshop, students will expand on what they learned about three-dimensional art through a
related hands-on project using a variety of materials.
