Subject Area: Physical Education Course Hours: 60 Grade: 6th Teachers: M. Byrd, M. Clark

Course Description: Our purpose throughout this year is to develop student competence in the basic motor skills of a variety of movement forms. Students will
participate in dance, team, dual, and individual activities, outdoor pursuits and aquatics. We seek to engage our students in a curriculum that focuses on movement
instruction so that our students can and will become skillful, lifetime participants in physical activity. Within each unit, we integrate Health, History, Math,
Language Arts, and Social Education as we seek to develop the whole child in a student focused program.

Internationalism: In dance, we explore several cultures and histories of other countries. Through this movement, students are able to experience life outside of
them and awake their creativity in performing a Dance project of their own. During our Survivor unit, students are engaged in discovering the many diverse
cultures of various tribal communities. After choosing a tribal name for themselves, students portray tribal colors and history though team color days and
presentations as their tribe battles to be the one sole survivor. Throughout every unit, movement activities are accompanied with music from several cultures giving
the students a small taste of the vibrancy and life that each culture possesses. Our final cultural experience is brought forth in our end of the year school-wide
Olympics. Students see and become a part of the Greek culture as they walk in the ceremonial parade, reign victorious in several Olympic events and receive their
final crown of leaves from Caesar himself.

Assessment: While Criteria C is our primary MYP Assessment focus, we also seek to assess our students in Criterion D and A. In addition, we are using a
comprehensive state mandated evaluation program called South Carolina Physical Education Assessment Program (SCPEAP)
