General Project Information

The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History in Ann Arbor is bringing the nationally
traveling exhibition RACE: Are we so different? to campus from February through May 2013. The
purpose of the exhibition is to stimulate a national conversation about race. Three overlapping
audience engagement components are planned, which together we are calling the Understanding Race
Project:

       1) A campus-wide LSA Theme Semester on Race, from January through April 2013, including
          courses, additional exhibitions, performances, films, lectures, etc.;
       2) Outreach to K-12 schools and families throughout Washtenaw County and beyond; and
       3) A community engagement project reaching out to youth, adults, and community groups,
          government agencies, and faith-based entities.

We need to communicate information about events, activities, and resources with multiple audiences
via a website and regular e-mail communications. In addition, we will need flyers, posters, and
brochures. We would like all of these components to have a recognizable graphic identity/brand.

The RACE exhibition has a graphics package that must be used for promoting the exhibition. We
would like to develop graphics for the Understanding Race Project that visually relate to the exhibition
graphics.

Overall Needs for Design / Branding

   1) Create a visual identity for the Understanding Race Project, including an electronic e-mail
      masthead.
   2) Develop and launch a website in a CMS program such as WordPress.
   3) Design Additional Components such as print brochures, flyers, posters, banners, and electronic
      designs as requested.

      exhibition graphics.
   2) Develop a visual identity for the local Understanding Race Project that is visually related to the
national RACE exhibition graphics, including a logo or mark, font(s), and color palette.

Website Goals:

URL: www.UnderstandingRaceProject.org (temporary content is already at this URL)

 As described above, this site is the informational hub for the Understanding Race Project, a
community project led by the U-M Museum of Natural History
 The site should be designed in a CMS program that can be edited/updated by our staff
 Event information is presented three ways: in an automatically updating section on the home
page, on a calendar grid, and in pull-down menus and subpages organized by event type
 Subpages should have layouts that can work with or without photos/images
 The home page has a blog that links to continuation on sub-page(s)
 The site may eventually have more than 50 pages
 Other organizations can submit event information via a form, which, once approved by a
moderator, is added to the events information
 Users can register for an event
 Users can join our e-mail list
 Features a resources section with video, links and articles.
 Links to social media: Facebook, Twitter, Google +
 Should be optimized for search engines
 Design: clean, attractive to a racially and ethnically diverse group of people
 Should be easy on the eyes as people will do a lot of reading

Website Target Audience

   U-M student, faculty, staff
 K-12 teachers, administrators, and parents
 General public residents of Washtenaw County and southeastern Michigan
 People who search the web for information about Race, community building, race relations,
      diversity, inclusion, etc.

Reference websites:

  1) www.understandingrace.org • This is the national website for the traveling exhibition and will
give an idea of the exhibition graphic design.
  2) www.raceexhibit.org • This site was created when the exhibition was in Kalamazoo, MI. The
site has continued beyond the exhibition period to reflect ongoing community work around
race. The overall format of the site has not changed significantly.
  3) www.ecogirls.org • We like the clean, colorful layout of this site.
  4) http://www.lsa.umich.edu/museumstheme/ We love the warm, colorful look of this site and
it is useful to get a sense of what an LSA Theme Semester includes by clicking around to see the
content. (However, we’re not crazy about the animation of images on the home page and think
the images should be clickable, so it’s not quite perfect!)
  5) www.watersemester.org • We like the logo/header for this site but the rest of the design is dull
and uninspired. However, this site will also give a good sense of how extensive the LSA Theme
Semester content may become. We are likely to use this site and #’s 2 and 4 for inspiration for
the navigation for our new site; but we’ll need to add additional sections for K-12 and
     community activities.

Content
Content will be provided by our staff for the initial launch of the website. Writing is not required,
though edits are always welcome. Primary contacts for content will be Amy Harris (Museum
Director), Zarinah El-Amin Naeem (Understanding Race Project Community Liaison), and Kira
Berman (Museum Education Director). This is subject to change if additional staff become involved
  in the project.
